Seth MacFarlane is a huge Star Trek fan. You don’t have to look hard to see the proof: the cast of The Next Generation once appeared on an episode of Family Guy, and he played Starfleet officer Rivers in two episodes of Enterprise. Now, he has his own Trek parody set to debut this fall, and, judging from the show’s first trailer, it looks to be as broad and silly as anything the actor-animator has done in the past.
The first trailer for The Orville promises Star Trek crossed with Family Guy’s humor
A workplace comedy set in the 25th century
The Orville, first announced yesterday, is essentially a workplace comedy set in the 25th century. MacFarlane plays Captain Ed Mercer, an underachieving Planetary Union officer put in charge of the U.S.S. Orville and its mission to explore deep space. Joining him are his ex-wife Kelly Grayson (Agents of SHIELD alum Adrianne Palicki) and a quirky crew that includes a slime creature voiced by Norm MacDonald.
Does the show look funny? Well, kinda? The premise is interesting, but jokes about leaving the toilet seat up in the far future don’t hint at the show hitting a high comedic bar. Still, it looks gorgeous, and since that Galaxy Quest series is nowhere in sight, this will have to take its place for now. The Orville premieres this fall.
