Google will soon be able to remove objects from photos

Google says it’ll soon be able to automatically remove unwanted objects from photos. And not just minor obstructions, either: in a demo today, Google showed a chain-link fence being removed from the foreground of a picture. Only one demo was shown — and on a photo with relatively simply composition — but the result looked good.

Photoshop has been able to do something similar for a few years now, intelligently filling in areas of a photo by looking at what’s surrounding them. But intelligent fill features like that aren’t as readily available in apps meant for consumers, and presumably, Google is going to make this even easier to use. The company didn’t say where it would roll this feature out, but it seems likely to get built into Google Photos.
