The Magicians is based on Lev Grossman’s bestselling trilogy of novels, which follow aspiring magician Quentin Coldwater and his friends as they attend a magical academy called Brakebills, hidden in upstate New York. They discover that Fillory, the fantasy world of a popular children’s book series, is real, and that life as magicians isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In the show’s second season, they become Fillory’s rulers, and as they contend with hostile neighbors and a world in a state of decline, they decide that ruling a fantasy kingdom isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. The third season has the group off on a quest to locate seven magical keys to bring magic back to the world, after it was essentially shut off at the end of season 2.
Earlier this year, my colleague Chaim Gartenberg noted that the show has “quietly become one of the most consistently entertaining shows on TV,” using a diverse cast to deal with serious issues like trauma and sexual assault. The series is often described as a more adult take on the Harry Potter books and films, blended with C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia novels. But Grossman and the showrunners have forged their own unique story. The first two seasons are currently available on Netflix in the US.
