The first trailer for the YouTube Red show Impulse is a moody take on young-adult superpowers

YouTube has released the first trailer for Impulse, a new original series from The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman. A spinoff to his 2008 film Jumper, the show will debut sometime this summer, with a 10-episode series order.

Jumper was based on a 1992 novel by Steven Gould, and followed a young man named David Rice (played by Star Wars prequel star Hayden Christensen) who discovers he has the ability to teleport. At the time of the film’s release, Liman hinted at plans for a sequel, but the project never materialized.

Impulse, however, is based on the third book in Gould’s series, and tells the story of a 16-year-old girl named Henry Coles (Maddie Hasson), who discovers she has similar powers. At first, the trailer looks like any other moody, young-adult drama, featuring shots of Henry and various rebellious teenagers at school, set to a moody cover of Blondie’s “Heart of Glass.” But it soon becomes clear that there’s something else going on with Henry, and she may be struggling with powers she cannot possibly comprehend.

YouTube Red announced the show back in 2016 as part of its original programming slate, along with projects from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Rick & Morty and Community creator Dan Harmon. Earlier this year, Liman told the Television Critic’s Association that he was eager to explore the world of Gould’s novels again, calling Jumper the film of his that he was “least happy with.”
