Nintendo announced today that some of the most beloved role-playing classics from developer Square Enix are coming to the Switch next year, including Final Fantasy VII. The news was announced during the company’s Nintendo Direct live stream. In addition to FFVII, Switch owners are also getting FFIX, FFX/X-2, and FF12.

It looks like the latter three titles will be the HD remastered versions that were released for the PlayStation 4 / PS Vita consoles as well. Nintendo has previously confirmed Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition for its handheld console, too.

All of these titles are arriving some time in 2019. And naturally, it looks like Nintendo is leaving out Final Fantasy VIII, which is the one installment in the series between the 7th and 10th ones not to have been ported over to iOS and Android.

Needless to say, bringing classic Square RPGs, especially FFVII and FFIX, to the Switch has been a no-brainer since day one, and this will surely excite longtime fans of the genre to know they can play these games on the go in a proper handheld console setting. Prior to this, the PS Vita has been the best way to enjoy classic PlayStation RPGs, and that device’s lack of support from Sony and its general deficiencies compared to the Switch make it a less than ideal platform to keep playing on.
