There’s a very good, simple reason movies are so dark these days.
Whether it’s shows like Game of Thrones on HBO Max and The Mandalorian on Disney Plus, or movies like The Batman, Hollywood seems to have fallen absolutely in love with scenes that are so darkly-lit that you can barely see what’s happening on-screen.
The internet’s spent countless debate cycles coming up with grand theories as to why filmmakers are so into making their work hard to see. But the answer our colleagues over at Polygon have come around on feels as true as it does frustrating.
