Sen. Blumenthal hopes to pass AI legislation by year’s end.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal said during a hearing from the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law that he hopes the US will pass licensing rules for AI companies. The proposal, which Blumenthal co-wrote with Sen. Josh Hawley, seeks to mandate developers of AI models register with an independent oversight agency.
Blumenthal, however, cannot control his peers and how fast the legislative process is. But he said the committee plans to convene more hearings to talk about regulating AI to help colleagues understand the technology so policymaking could go faster.
