5G

Led by telecommunications giants such as Verizon, AT&T, Samsung, Qualcomm, and Ericsson, the move to 5G is well and truly underway. This next-generation cellular networking standard promises an order of magnitude faster speeds than 4G LTE, though it will take a considerable amount of time and work until it is fully deployed and operational to its fullest potential.

ATSC 3.0, the next generation of broadcast TV, is still happening.

You will be forgiven if you forgot broadcast TV exists, but it does! I watched so much Fire Country this weekend on it. But broadcast TV also kind of sucks, and ATSC 3.0, the next generation of the standard, is supposed to fix that.

Except only a handful of stations across the country currently support ATSC 3.0, and that’s unlikely to change soon. Yet it isn’t stopping companies from showing off what ATSC 3.0 can do, like broadcast OTA TV to a car via 5G. Too bad most of the stuff we watch is on subscription-based streaming services.

I went to the Genesis point of Dish’s 5G network, and all I got was disappointment

Project Genesis launched in Las Vegas first, so I figured the experience of using it there would be much better than in Spokane. I was wrong.

The 5G monolith watches over all of us.

I had totally forgotten about those supertall 5G-transmitting “smart poles” that have started going up in New York City, so it was a little shocking to see just how utterly gargantuan they really are. They’re three-stories tall! I’m sure they’ll fit in better once they’re covered in stickers, graffiti tags, and “Dan Smith will teach you guitar” leaflets.

Pilots think 5G is messing with their planes.

As this report from IEEE Spectrum points out, though, several pilots have blamed it for malfunctions. It’s possible they’re only noticing the issues because of the hubbub, but the article does a great job at explaining the reports.

Ford’s new Super Duty pickups are the first to have 5G modems in the US.

Ford’s newest big work trucks are the first pickups in the US with 5G modems (supplied by Qualcomm, of course), and the first vehicles I’ve seen with 5G at all, really. It mostly allows the built-in WiFi hotspot to support 10 devices. Audi and GM have plans to add 5G in 2024, as do other carmakers like Stellantis. Remember when 5G was going to revolutionize cars?

After three months, Dish’s 5G service still feels like a beta

The company is expanding Project Genesis’ coverage, but there are still basic features missing that make it clear the service isn’t for the general public.
