Morgan Stanley Analysts explain the career tips you won’t learn in school
We all started out somewhere — here’s what you should know when starting out in your career.
1. Don’t be intimidated.
Your first few weeks on a new job can be a whirlwind of new faces and information, but don’t let that intimidate you. Your team wants you to succeed and have a great career.
2. It’s okay to ask for help.
Struggling isn’t something to be embarrassed about — it’s an opportunity to learn. Ask for help from your teammates. They’re happy to help.
3. Be eager to learn.
In your first year, you’ll experience all sorts of new situations and challenges. Take these as an opportunity to ask questions, do new things, and build up your skill set.
4. A good attitude goes a long way.
You’ll probably find your self working some late nights or facing unanticipated challenges. When this happens, stay positive and optimistic. You might be surprised by how much a good attitude can benefit both your own mindset and your work.
5. Pay attention to detail.
Whether the task at hand is big or small, keep an eye out for careless errors and always try to do your best. Your efforts won’t go unnoticed.
6. Get to know people in the company.
Some of your most rewarding work relationships will be found among peer groups, such as those you’ll find in Morgan Stanley’s Summer Analysts program. In addition to your peers and immediate team, get to know people in other departments with whom you’ll be working often.
7. You don’t have to be a finance major to work in finance.
Your differences are your strengths, so use them to your advantage. Morgan Stanley is an investment bank, but you don’t have to be a finance major to succeed there. Call on your own unique experience to bring a new perspective to your work.
8. Enjoy the perks.
You’ll be working hard, so don’t forget to reward yourself. From museum and theater discounts to gym memberships, make sure to find out which perks are available to your company’s employees and take full advantage.
