Today’s Vergecast: Why your favorite creator is building an app.

Creator life involves using a lot of software. Bad software. Stephen Robles is one of the creators who decided to build something better, for himself and for his community. He tells David how he thinks about his responsibility as a developer, how he makes apps, and how AI is changing the way he builds things for his audience.

I tried a $99 plug that promises to track your car and send help when needed — without selling your data

The Miles Plug adds crash detection, roadside help, location tracking, and a warning-light decoder to your car for as low as $11 a month.

This indie vampire game is keeping its playtest private because of AI clones.

Digital Sun thanked Steam players for signing up for a first playtest of an upcoming game called ReVamp, but said that:

As stated on our socials, we’ve been concerned by recent news of games being reverse-engineered, cloned and published before the original is even out. With launch still months away, sharing a build with tens of thousands of players felt like too big a risk for ReVamp.

The studio adds that “We’d also love to see platforms keep strengthening protections for original work, so studios of every size can keep sharing their games early.”

Gemini Notebook will now lay out its plans before generating a slide deck or video.

The AI note-taking app will use your sources to suggest topics for a slide deck or video, while allowing you to confirm decisions on formatting, visual style, and scope before it starts creating. You can also turn on a new “Review” toggle that lets you look over a final outline before Gemini Notebook’s final rendering.

Spotify is now asking some Premium Family plan members to verify with QR codes.

The idea is to verify that a plan member actually lives with the plan manager, according to a Spotify support page reported on by 9to5Google. Basically, it seems like a way to crack down on non-affiliated people from using a family plan to save money on Spotify.

Privacy Badger can now block online trackers on Safari for macOS.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation’s free browser extension is now available on Safari version 26.5 and later, along with other browsers like Firefox and Chrome. EFF says it’s working on bringing Privacy Badger to Safari for iOS, too. Earlier this month, EFF also shared some new guides with more online privacy tips and browser suggestions.

My favorite game from GDC 2025 just got a release date.

Faraway, a game where you play as a shooting star and slingshot around other stars, is launching on November 5th on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X / S. The game blew me away in just a 10-minute demo last year, and I can’t wait to check out the full release.

The planned film was announced in 2020, but Waititi tells Inverse that he and screenwriter Tony McNamara are “going to actually put it on ice and we’re working on a different thing together.”

“Instead, I have decided that someone else should stop me.”

I understand the concerns. After all, I am attempting to assemble a living human being from dead human tissue and bring it to life with electricity, which isn’t generally considered something a person does after carefully considering the possible consequences.

But what am I supposed to do—stop?

Microsoft: frontier models cannot be trusted.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said earlier this month that we should assume that all AI models are “compromised,” and now Microsoft is going one step further. “Unfortunately, frontier models, regardless of their origin, cannot be trusted,” says Hayete Gallot, executive vice president of Microsoft Security. Microsoft is naturally positioning its new Project Perception as a solution to securing AI models. It’s an agentic security system designed to help cybersecurity professionals secure and control AI agents.

Hackers stole millions of California students’ data in a breach.

Students’ names, addresses, birth dates, demographic info, disability status, and other personal data was copied from Educational Testing Services, one of the state’s testing partners, the Los Angeles Times reports. California’s Department of Education says the breach could affect “all students enrolled in the three previous school years.”

This Switch 2 dock is simplified to just an HDMI cable.

The branding of the Hidisc HD-TCHD2MPDBK Type-C HDMI Mirroring Cable isn’t exactly simple, but if you’re looking for a Switch 2 dock that’s easy to stash they’re not going to get more streamlined than this. The cable’s launching in Japan for 1,980 yen (around $12.50) but you’ll need to connect and provide a USB-C power source in order for the Switch 2 to output video.

US civilian agencies can’t use DeepSeek, DHS says.

The Department of Homeland Security ordered the agencies to remove any technology created by the Chinese AI company over concerns that its models may transfer “sensitive data to the PRC,” according to Reuters. The ban also prevents civilian agencies from using third-party services that integrate DeepSeek’s AI models.
