Mars at dawn is gorgeous.

NASA shared these images from the Curiosity rover as the Sun rose over the Martian cliffs, bathing them in soft, diffuse light. The color is more subdued than the bright rust red we’re used to. There’s an eerie beauty to the hazy landscape.

Someone got Googlebook OS running on a Mac.

This is definitely a proceed-with-caution situation. It’s experimental: Bluetooth doesn’t work, you’re capped at a 60HZ refresh, and there are some other bugs too. But if you’ve got an Apple Silicon machine with at least 16GB of RAM, you could install Googlebook OS and give it a test drive.

The fully playable Stylophone Mini is no bigger than a credit card.

The 58-year-old electronic instrument embraced by artists like David Bowie and Kraftwerk was already a compact alternative to a keyboard. The FCC might let political groups send you more AI robocalls.

It banned AI robocalls in 2024, but the Associated Press reports Brendan Carr’s FCC is considering a waiver that would allow political calls “using an artificial or prerecorded voice—including an AI-generated voice— without obtaining prior express consent.” If the waiver’s granted, it could mean an influx of AI calls ahead of the midterm elections.

Waymo borrows $5 billion for robotaxi expansion.

The Alphabet-owned company announced its first debt financing of $5 billion, arranged by Goldman Sachs and a bunch of private credit providers. Earlier this year, Waymo raised $16 billion in equity; this time its debt. As it scales its robotaxi service, Waymo needs to buy more stuff, like cars, sensors, charging stations, and depots. And banks and lenders are more willing to let the company take out loans using that stuff as collateral. At this stage of the game, paying back a loan with interest is cheaper than giving away equity. Waymo’s growing up!
