Meta remembers the Portal exists and turns it into an AI dev kit.

The company’s new agentic developer tools are giving the discontinued smart displays a second life as a smart home controller, family message board, art display, or anything you can dream up. The move comes shortly after Microsoft announced Project Solara. Meta says the tools are hardware-agnostic and work with many existing devices. Still, anything that breathes new life into a defunct gadget is a good thing.

Insta360’s DJI Pocket rival will track and match your head movements.

The company hasn’t confirmed when its dual camera Luna Ultra will see a global release, but it recently teased a new head-tracking accessory. The POV Head Tracker is worn like an open-style earbud and translates your head movements to the Luna Ultra so it’s always capturing what you’re looking at.

No sharp objects.

The bubble is very delicate, even a social media slop filter might burst it.

It would be devastating to the bubble. No sharp objects near the AI please.

“Form is everything in Pilates, so we are taking a purposeful approach to ensure we develop the most effective, safest, and fun experiences possible—ones people will keep doing for life.”

Google is testing a floating desktop AI Search bar.

I wasn’t able to enable it in Google’s Chrome Canary developer sandbox, but Windows Report got it working using a Ctrl+Shift+Space keyboard shortcut on Windows. It opens as a standalone window centered on the screen, with AI Mode at the heart of the experience.

A screenshot of Google’s floating Search bar experiment in Chrome Canary.
The interface supports traditional search and AI Mode tasks from a single window, with a “plus” icon for uploading images and files.

Airbnb CEO is the latest bot-licker.

OG Silicon Valley founder / CEO types just can’t resist the lure of AI. At least Chesky will reportedly remain at Airbnb, unlike Dropbox’s Drew Houston who jumped ship entirely with his billions.

Elon Musk’s $2 trillion IPO hits a guardrail.

The S&P just found the backbone that Nasdaq discarded on the street alongside the rest of New York City’s trash. While others are bending the rules to accommodate SpaceX and other gargantuan IPOs, the S&P is standing firm. “No changes will be made” to accommodate these mega offerings.

Aston Martin and Chillblast teamed up on some super expensive gaming PCs.

They start at £3,749.99, and there’s a model on Chillblast’s website that costs £15,999.99. But just imagine playing 007 First Light on them! The immersion — the type of PC only James Bond could afford!

WTF is going on with Lego, YouTubers, Utah police, and Patreon?

A YouTuber has been arrested. The CEO of Patreon refused to take down his videos. Lawsuits and restraining orders have been filed. All after a Lego reseller, Bricks & Minifigs, reportedly didn’t pay an 83-year-old man for the $100K-plus Lego collection he offered the store on consignment.

Brave Origin comes with the same privacy-focused features as the free version, but it will allow you to fully switch off certain features — not just hide them — including Leo AI, Brave rewards, the browser’s built-in wallet, and more. The standard version of Brave “will remain free and fully supported.”

Today’s Vergecast: Microsoft’s plan to catch up in AI.

Microsoft’s commitment to AI is not news. Copilot has been everywhere for... a while now. But at this week’s Build developer conference, the company made clear that it wants — and needs — to be a bigger player in the space. The Verge’s Tom Warren joins David to talk about the new Scout AI assistant, the Solara operating system concept, and whether Microsoft can hang with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Also: how’s the new era of Xbox going?

Anthropic made a statement about recursive self-improvement, a big AI industry talking point (and concern).

RSI is also defined as an “AI system capable of fully autonomously designing and developing its own successor,” per Anthropic’s blog post. “We are not there yet, and recursive self-improvement is not inevitable. But it could come sooner than most institutions are prepared for.”

While it’s unclear what Bluesky wants to turn into, the company is “very inspired by companies like Reddit,” COO Rose Wang tells CNBC.

Wang also says that Bluesky needs to “get to parity on video features” — and earlier today, the platform announced that video uploads can now be as big as 300MB.

Dexcom doubles down on nondiabetic CGM use.

First off, it announced today that it plans to acquire Nutrisense — a CGM startup that targets nondiabetics. Stelo, its over-the-counter CGM, is also getting an FDA-cleared redesign that includes “pattern recognition, proactive AI coaching, and personalized weekly and daily summaries.” Hopefully, these moves help ease the data fatigue I experienced in my yearlong experiment with CGMs as a nondiabetic.

Not every animator is ready to give up on AI.

The Book of Life director Jorge Gutierrez cancelled an AI animation collaboration with Amazon last week following massive backlash. A new project by two Pixar alums, premiering at Tribeca Film Festival this weekend, shows that not every use of the tech is about fast, cheap slop.

Investors plow another $400 million into Suno’s AI muzak.

The company just raised $250 million in November against a $2.45 billion valuation — already a staggering jump from its roughly $500 million valuation in 2024. Now it’s more than doubled its valuation to $5.4 billion in just over six months, suggesting that investors haven’t been scared off by looming lawsuits.

A new bipartisan framework could preempt state AI laws for three years.

Reps. Jay Obernolte (R-CA) and Lori Trahan (D-MA) are releasing a highly anticipated 269-page draft bill as a launching pad for discussion about federal AI regulation, Politico reported. In a Bloomberg Law op-ed, the lawmakers said a national standard is necessary to extend protections across state lines.

Supreme Court backs FCC process that let it fine carriers over location sharing.

In an 8-1 ruling, the justices found that the Federal Communications Commission’s in-house process to levy fines doesn’t violate companies’ right to a jury trial. The case involved AT&T and Verizon’s challenges to fines they faced during the Biden administration over allegations they illegally shared customers’ location without consent.
