Is everything ok Microsoft?

The official @microsoft X account has been compromised. Microsoft’s X account followed a Clippy crypto account earlier today, reposted one of its tweets, and had its profile picture changed to a Clippy one. The posts were then removed, but a strange “apology” tweet appeared around 30 minutes later and was deleted rather quickly.

“We have confirmed unauthorized access to our account on X including posts that did not come from Microsoft,” says Microsoft spokesperson Brent Colburn. “The account has been secured and the unauthorized posts have been removed, and we are continuing to investigate the circumstances.”

Update: Microsoft has confirmed its X account has been compromised.

OpenAI severs ties with safety researchers accused of disclosing confidential information.

The three researchers — Jasmine Wang, Tomek Korbak, and Mikita Balesni — allegedly shared confidential information with an outside AI safety organization, according to The Wall Street Journal. OpenAI confirmed its decision in a statement to the outlet:

We have parted ways with three individuals for violating our policies on accessing and handling sensitive company information. Our investigation confirmed that these individuals mishandled sensitive information outside established company procedures, violating our policies and breaking the trust essential to our work.

A screen-free camera that’s compatible with monoculars.

I know Nocs Provisions because of its neat-looking binoculars and monoculars. Now, the company makes tech. Its $179.99 Portal FN7 is an screenless outdoor camera with an IP56 rating, USB-C connectivity, six image filters, a digital viewfinder, and the ability to shoot 16-megapixel photos and 4K video. Notably, it includes a shroud that lets you mount one of its mono/binoculars for a closer look.

Universal Audio’s 2nd-gen Volt interfaces support 32-bit audio and have full-color screens.

The budget-friendly Volt Gen 2 and Volt Max lineups still feature a built-in emulation of UA’s classic 1176 compressor. But add an emulation of the LA-2A compressor as well as three different preamp modes for Warmth (tube), Focus (solid-state), and Shine (British Class-A) that let you do a lot of tone shaping before you even hit your DAW.

Google adds a new security feature to Android’s Advanced Protection arsenal.

Advanced Protection, which launched last year as an option for people who need stronger security safeguards, will now automatically lock down a device if it detects repeated authentication failures within settings menus and apps.

This builds upon several other capabilities available with Advanced Protection, including features that block unknown USB chargers and prevent apps from abusing accessibility features.

Threads’ new media editor lets you add stickers to photos and set different layouts.

It’s available now for me in the Threads iOS app. Meta is also testing the ability to let you put Threads posts over videos that you can interact with.

007 First Light’s new DLC adds photo mode and a dog you can pet.

The free DLC, which launches today, also adds some new missions, a New Game Plus that lets you wear the various unlockable outfits wherever you want in the game, and a harder 00 difficulty. Seems like some great updates for an already excellent game.

‘Something new is coming from Windows,’ says Microsoft.

Microsoft is holding a Windows and Surface event in San Francisco next week. With Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang in attendance, it was already clear that RTX Spark PCs would be the main focus of the event. Now Microsoft says the October 7th event will include “RTX Spark and new experiences designed to unlock more possibilities for developers and builders.” Mysterious. Stay tuned for full coverage from The Verge next week.

Watch Boston Dynamics’ Atlas robot change a drill bit with its new four-fingered hands.

The redesigned hands have 13 degrees of freedom and “dense tactile pressure sensors” that allow Atlas to use real-world tools, like the drill it tries out in a demo video. Boston Dynamics also ditched the pinky finger on the new hands to “reduce cost, size, and failure points.” Maybe Tesla will go a similar route with its bot?

Mike Tomlin’s Minecraft city is amazing.

The former NFL coach went deep on his extremely detailed Minecraft project in a nearly 20-minute video that was published yesterday. I love how much he thinks about lighting and good views.
