In case you were wondering what Vision Pro demos are like...

Apple’s uploaded a full guided tour of the Vision Pro onto YouTube. I had an in-person demo earlier this week, and this video is sort of like a speed-run of many of the things that I saw. (I also got to see the butterfly land on my finger.) Granted, this is an even more controlled setting but you get a sense of the interface and some of the things you can do.

That said, it doesn’t really convey what screens or spatial photos truly look like — nor does it address the physicality of the headset itself.

Sam Altman says the future of AI depends on breakthroughs in clean energy.

The OpenAI CEO said during an event in Davos this week that “We still don’t appreciate the energy needs of this technology,” which is expected to consume an enormous amount of electricity as it matures. “There’s no way to get there without a breakthrough. We need [nuclear] fusion or we need like radically cheaper solar plus storage or something at massive scale,” Altman said.

Altman and Microsoft are both backers of the startup Helion, which is trying to develop a nuclear fusion generator — considered the Holy Grail of clean energy. But after more than 70 years of research punctuated with limited breakthroughs, many experts expect that the world will be chasing that Holy Grail for decades longer. Luckily, solar energy is already the cheapest source of electricity in history — the world just needs better batteries to store it.

HMD minus the Nokia bit.

91Mobiles has a render of what might just be the first smartphone from HMD Global to be branded as an HMD, rather than a Nokia, device. HMD Global CEO Jean-Francois Baril announced the new initiative last year, adding that the company plans to continue releasing Nokia phones alongside its HMD-branded devices.

An unnamed HMD phone from the front and back.
The phone has the model number N159V, but it’s unclear what its consumer name could be.

Ford is scaling back F-150 Lightning production even more.

The automaker says it’s reducing production of the F-150 Lightning as expected EV sales in 2024 are “less than anticipated.” It’s shifting workers to its facilities working on the gas-powered Ranger and Bronco instead.

Last month, Ford said it would cut production of its EV pickup from 3,200 per week to around 1,600 amidst slowing demand.

VanMoof starts delivering spare e-bike parts to new service centers.

The trailblazing Dutch e-bike brand that went vanpoof last year is slowly delivering upon promises made by new owner McLaren Applied. Parts are limited, and right now only eight service center partners have been named for all of the Netherlands and Germany, but it’s a start with more parts and countries to come.

More details in the FAQ and in this email sent to subscribers:

Good news! This week we delivered the first spare parts to selected VanMoof partners in the Netherlands and Germany. For certain repairs, you can immediately book an appointment with a VanMoof partner near you. Please note that our partners have limited stock and capacity.

We’ll be rolling this out much further in the coming months - adding another 40 locations, delivering more components, and expanding to more countries before mid-February.

Wayfair is laying off 1,650 people.

The cuts, which amount to 13 percent of the company, were announced today. Wayfair previously laid off 1,750 people almost exactly a year ago.

The layoffs today follow an internal memo sent by CEO Niraj Shah last month, in which he lectured employees about working hard and told them to have less of a work-life balance:

“Working long hours, being responsive, blending work and life, is not anything to shy away from,” he wrote. “There is not a lot of history of laziness being rewarded with success.”

The maker of The Transformers toys helped design a robot that’s about to land on the Moon.

Japan’s space agency JAXA is attempting a soft landing of its Moon Sniper mission. After alighting, the lander will eject SORA-Q, a transforming robot roughly the size of a baseball that was made with the help of toy company Takara Tomy.

But don’t get too attached —the robot’s battery life is only two hours.

Watch JAXA’s livestream, which is scheduled to start at 9AM ET on Friday. The landing is estimated to occur at 10:20AM ET.
