Having performance issues with YouTube? Try a different ad blocker.

Folks online have accused YouTube of targeting AdBlock users with degraded performance, with reports of the desktop player freezing up, lagging while buffering, and hogging CPU usage.

YouTube has since refuted this. Our own tests found that using Chrome extensions on PC for other ad blockers like Ublock and Ghostery didn’t affect performance, and uninstalling the latest AdBlock browser extension eradicated the issues entirely.

Elon Musk is uncomfortable with the amount of control Elon Musk has over Tesla.

The Tesla CEO and X CTO / owner writes that “I am uncomfortable growing Tesla to be a leader in AI & robotics without having ~25% voting control,” and proposed building products (like Grok?) outside of Tesla instead.

Musk’s stake in the company reportedly dropped to 13.4 percent in 2022 as he sold shares and acquired X, then known as Twitter. Now there’s this statement, a recent WSJ report citing concerns about drug use, and... Tesla’s Q4 earnings report coming up on January 24th.

“I am uncomfortable growing Tesla to be a leader in AI & robotics without ~25% control. Enough to be influential, but not so much I can’t be overturned. Unless that is the case, I would prefer to build products outside of Tesla. You don’t seem to understand Tesla is not one startup, but a dozen. Simply look at the delta between what Tesla does and GM.  As for stock ownership itself being enough motivation, Fidelity and other own similar stakes. Why don’t they show up for work?”

Starlink is coming to John Deere.

It makes sense that a new deal will see the company outfitting new and existing hardware with Starlink. That should allow people who live in the middle of nowhere to better take advantage of the high-tech tools John Deere has been packing inside recently. Because right now the rural internet situation is hellish.

As for cost, John Deere hasn’t settled on a price for the new connectivity option, but it does plan to generate 10-percent of its annual revenue from software service fees by 2030.

Swatting is such a problem, even the White House has to deal with it.

President Biden was, fortunately, away when someone called this morning to claim the White House was on fire.

But he’s not the only one dealing with it. The practice of calling 911 to send emergency services or swat teams somewhere has gone from the early victims like influencers, streamers, and random internet commenters, to politicians, judges, and even prosecutors, like special counsel Jack Smith.

Apple’s Watch workaround to avoid an import ban has reportedly been approved.

Word of this comes not from US Customs, but Masimo’s own lawyers in a letter published by 9to5Mac. It says the updated watches “do not contain pulse oximetry functionality,” which is a step further than last month’s report that Apple engineers were working on new algorithms.

It means Apple can continue importing the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 despite the patent infringement dispute — just without blood oxygen reading features enabled.

Meta’s new mixed reality app lets you digitally deconstruct the Quest 3.

Caddy is a free visualizer tool that utilizes hand-tracking to interact with 3D CAD models — allowing users to “grab” individual components, and measure both real and digital objects like you’re operating Tony Stark’s sci-fi workbench.

Every Meta Quest VR headset released to date is currently supported and it even has a collaborative mode for working on projects as a group.

PSA: Wear fake fingers to make real photos look AI generated.

The following is a dramatic retelling:

Prosecutor: That’s you in this surveillance image, correct?

Ne’er-do-well: That’s a deepfake, count the digits.

Judge: Case dismissed.

AI will impact the global economy — for better or worse.

Analysis from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warns that almost 40 percent of global employment is exposed to AI. While some workflows are assisted or “complimented” by the technology, it’s also expected to replace some jobs entirely.

Roles that are highly exposed to AI but aren’t necessarily aided by it — such as administrative work and telemarketing — are the most likely to be displaced, particularly in advanced economies.

A graph provided by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that breaks down employment by how exposed it is to AI.
AI is expected to assist “high complementarity” (red) jobs, whereas “low complementarity” (pinkie peach) jobs could be at risk. Blue jobs are unaffected.

Long live the mute switch.

The OnePlus 12 launches globally on January 23rd, but testing is underway. I can’t tell you how much it costs or when it will be available, but I can show you this marbled green finish on my review unit. I don’t know, it’s kind of growing on me? One thing’s for sure: it’s one of the last places you’ll find a dedicated mute switch.

Microsoft “Copilot Pro” hints appear in leaked code.

Android Authority has spotted some interesting text in early Canary versions of Android’s Edge browser. “Get the latest AI models, priority access for quick answers, and high-quality image creation with Copilot Pro,” the code reads. It’s unclear when the “Copilot Pro” service might launch, but hopefully it won’t come with the same 300 conversations per day cap, or limit of 30 replies per chat.
