Silver linings in the Ring alarm monitoring price hike.

According to spokeperson Yassi Yarger:

● Customers who got that misleading “New Name, New Features, Same Great Price” email will now get free monitoring through January 1st, 2027 as apology.

● Depending on your Plus renewal date, you get up to a free year of monitoring — because Ring is raising the price on your first bill after March 1st. (Mine renews March 5th, unfortunately.)

● Ring Protect Pro customers get a one-year free trial of Ring Home Premium.

Automattic’s lawyer: “The whole thing is meritless.”

Automattic posted a response to the lawsuit from WordPress.com competitor WP Engine. The response includes a statement from Neal Katyal, who the company has retained as legal counsel:

I stayed up last night reading WP Engine’s Complaint, trying to find any merit anywhere to it. The whole thing is meritless, and we look forward to the federal court’s consideration of their lawsuit.

Games Done Quick is raising money for Hurricane Helene disaster relief.

Disaster Relief Done Quick, which will benefit the nonprofit Direct Relief, will kick off starting October 11th at 6PM ET and end on October 13th at 11:59PM ET. If you want to share a run, you can make a submission now.

Samsung SmartThings becomes the first platform to support Matter 1.3.

At its developer conference today, the company announced support for the latest version of the Matter spec, which includes EV chargers, ovens, cooktops, microwaves, tumble dryers, extractor hoods, water sensors, and water valves — along with energy reporting.

There aren’t Matter devices available in these categories yet, but this news might mean we’ll see some soon. Though not Samsung appliances, which don’t support Matter yet.
