New AI data centers could raise Americans’ electricity bills.

Utility planning documents show rising costs for customers in some regions of the US as tech companies build out energy-hungry data centers, the Washington Post reports:

“A lot of governors and local political leaders who wanted economic growth and vitality from these data centers are now realizing it can come at a cost of increased consumer bills,” said Neil Chatterjee, former chair of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

The iPhone 16’s Camera Control button will soon let you lock focus and exposure.

As spotted by 9to5Mac, the second iOS 18.2 beta introduces the ability to press and hold the Camera Control button to keep focus and exposure. You can currently use the Camera Control button to quickly snap photos and adjust settings (but not lock them).

The New York Times election needle just got even more stressful.

More than 600 Times engineers, product managers, data analysts, and designers went on strike today, and publisher AG Sulzberger told staff that it’s likely the strike will continue into Election Day.

According to a letter of support signed by newsroom staff, nearly half of the Tech Guild works on election projects. Let’s hope someone is around to fix the needle tomorrow.

Apple’s latest visionOS beta update wraps you in macOS.

The company just released the developer beta for visionOS 2.2, which brings with it wide and ultrawide curved virtual display options for the Vision Pro, 9to5Mac reports.

Beta users will also finally be able to output their Mac’s audio on the headset while using the virtual display with this update. (Before, the audio would only come from the Mac’s speakers.)

Another independent site says Google killed its business.

Entertainment outlet Giant Freakin Robot will stop publishing new content to its site and instead focus on YouTube, citing plummeting Google traffic.

It’s not the first small publisher who’s been vocal about how changes to Google’s search algorithm has made it all but impossible to keep the lights on. And Google has said it “can’t guarantee” traffic to independent sites will ever recover.
