Most wireless speaker systems compromise sound quality for convenience, but Matthew Perks’ custom setup cuts the cords without any audio compression. It upgrades an optical S/PDIF connection, which typically relies on LEDs and fiber optic cables, with lasers and mirrors that bounce digital audio signals around a room from transmitters to receivers connected to each satellite speaker.

The internet is forever. Well, it was supposed to be. What happens when websites start to vanish at random?
Taipei wants to make its communications networks less vulnerable to Chinese attack. Starlink isn’t an option because of Musk’s business ties to China and his company’s refusal to relinquish control in a joint venture. And Eutelsat’s OneWeb constellation of low Earth satellites isn’t up to snuff, according to technology minister Wu Cheng-wen:
“We found that their bandwidth is too small for real applications,” the minister said about OneWeb. “So far as I know, the company is in financial problems at this moment, so they have a [delay] in developing the second generation satellites.
Bezos’ Kuiper is still just a promise but is expected to begin offering service from its constellation of low Earth orbit satellites next year.
In addition to the absurd 21.5- and 32-inch screens already available on its fridges, it’s now offering a smaller 9-inch option while slapping 7-inch displays on its washer, dryer, and wall oven. Smaller 4.3-inch displays will be available in some markets.
The screens provide local and central control of Samsung’s connected appliances as well as entertainment. And they’ll undoubtedly be great places to display ads. Hooray!

The feature was recently pushed into 2025.
