Modder gives a 38-year-old Apple keyboard a wireless upgrade.

The Apple IIGS (graphics and sound) debuted in 1986 with enhanced multimedia capabilities, but software developer Matt Chesters remembers it best for the sleek mechanical keyboard the computer shipped with.

In a 15-minute YouTube video they detail how they revived a used Apple Desktop Bus Keyboard and upgraded it with wireless Bluetooth connectivity, a rechargeable battery, a tiny OLED screen, and a dedicated volume control wheel.

China has big plans for AI content labeling.

A new regulation drafted this month aims to legally enforce a similar system to voluntary global initiatives like C2PA Authentication.

If enacted, AI providers in China must add explicit labels and metadata encryption to AI content, or face government penalties. Social media companies will also need to scan for these watermarks to label content on their platforms, and add more information to help track its journey online.

Combining an electric RV with a range extender just makes sense.

RVs are notorious gas guzzlers, averaging just 10mpg at best. This Class A eRV prototype from Airstream-parent Thor has an impressive 500 mile range: 150 miles from its 140kWh battery pack which can be recharged on the fly with a built-in combustion engine that acts like a generator. The hybrid RV will be available to buy in 2025.

Starlink passes 4M users.

It’s taken just four years and more than 6,000 satellites placed into low Earth orbit — at a rate of about 24 per launch — with service now in over 100 countries.

As noted by TechCrunch:

The milestone would mean that SpaceX has gained a million new customers since the end of May alone. This outpaces the company’s already impressive rate of growth: Starlink started providing beta service of its product in October 2020; it hit 1 million subscribers in December 2022, 2 million subscribers in September 2023, and 3 million in May.

I’ve been a user since 2022 and am currently testing the Starlink Mini — ask me anything.

Apple’s most expensive iPhone gets the most boring battery this year.

It has zero bearing on the experience of actually using your phone, but I agree with iFixit that Apple’s choice to explore new battery tech in every iPhone 16 except for the Max is... odd.

The 16 / 16 Plus have a very cool new removal method. The standard Pro’s battery is encased in metal. But the Max? Regular battery like always.

The consultant behind the Biden deepfake robocall got fined $6 million by the FCC.

Steve Kramer, who hired a magician to spoof Biden’s voice, admitted in February to orchestrating the calls. The Biden deepfake, sent two days before New Hampshire’s primary, told voters not to show up to the polls.

“If you flood our phones with this junk, we will find you and you will pay,” FCC chair Jessica Rosenworcel said Thursday.

More rumors about that “HomePod with a screen.”

This time from 9to5Mac, citing unnamed sources who say that the “HomeAccessory” device referenced in code is a smart home accessory with an A18 chip, that’s capable of handling Apple Intelligence features, apps, and acting as an AirPlay receiver.

They also report a camera for gesture control and that the “current” J490 device has a square display instead of a rectangular one.

Long live the HomeScreenPod.
