Tumblr users are reconstructing a nonexistent Martin Scorsese film.

If you didn’t have the pleasure of watching Goncharov unfold across Tumblr this weekend, Petrana Radulovic has you covered with an explanation of this gripping, classic, totally made-up 1970s gangster movie.

Across every corner of Tumblr, people are playing along. Sometimes this means posting about the fake scenes the way they would post about a real movie or show they’re excited about. Other posts are long meta-analyses of scenes that don’t exist and characters that are not real.

There’s also a fake poster, which helped kick off the whole phenomenon! It rules.

    “Horizon Workrooms is bad.”

If you haven’t listened to this week’s episode of The Vergecast yet or read Adi Robertson’s review of the Meta Quest Pro headset, that line about sums it up.

On the other hand, can you afford to miss Meta’s Notorious B.I.G. “VR concert experience” on December 16th?

It’s unclear exactly what that will be like, but this blog post makes the point that maybe Meta could have focused on living artists. It points out several who already perform VRChat, and other platforms that succeed in ways the Horizon environments haven’t yet.

EU Big Tech watchdog: Elon Musk’s verification plan is “completely flawed.”

Musk has already angered US regulators, and EU ones aren’t too happy with him either. The European Commission’s competition watchdog Margrethe Vestager has criticized Musk’s loose verification scheme to CNBC:

“If you are to pay to be vetted and to be certified as being who you are and everyone can be you ... I think that business model simply is completely flawed.”

Twitter might be on thin legal ice in Europe after firing huge numbers of employees responsible for safety and privacy. But for now, Vestager says “we need to see how this develops before any decisions are taken.”

How Alex Jones built his own reality.

Alex Jones has had lots of profiles over the years, but a new feature by Verge alumnus Joseph Flatley at Failed State Update focuses on his cult of personality and the allegedly hostile work environment at his site Infowars. Beneath those allegations, there’s a larger story about Jones’s political and social opportunism — and how it’s slowly backed him into a corner.

Is FTX’s founder a League of Legends genius? (No.)

One of the funniest parts of this week’s FTX meltdown was learning that CEO Sam Bankman-Fried apparently blew investors’ minds by playing League of Legends during a meeting.

It was first reported as a bit of gee-whiz startup mythmaking, and in the tradition of Kyle Orland’s brilliant investigation into Travis Kalanick’s Wii Tennis prowess, FT does the vital job of puncturing it by running down his actual history with the game. Turns out he’s a middling-to-bad player and doesn’t really deny it — which is fair! But maybe not a sign of unique genius.

What is going on at FanFiction.net?

FanFiction.net was many people’s introduction to the world of fandom, and for years it’s been rumored to be on the verge of a shutdown, run by a tiny team with very little public communication.

But after particularly intense doubts about its future this fall, its creator has been issuing a spate of updates and reassurances about stability fixes and new features. I’ve tried contacting them a few times without success, but I’m fascinated by whatever’s going on out there.
