Crypto is typically pretty anonymous...unless you don’t pay your contractors.

That’s what NYU student and Bitcoin mine owner Jerry Yu is learning. His company BitRush (also known as BytesRush) allegedly failed to pay some contractors who worked on his Bitcoin mine in Channing, Texas.

That naturally led to lawsuits, which in turn led to a quite revealing journey of how money moved between China and the United States via Binance while skirting regulations of both countries.

Remember to pay your bills folks!

Should kids set up their own game consoles?

Very soon a whole mess of kids are probably going to be getting Switches and Quests and other game consoles and across the Threadiverse people are fiercely debating one crucial point: should those kids set the console up themselves?

Consoles have never been more complex to set up! So it makes sense to set them up for your cherubic child. But kids are also struggling more with tech literacy than they have in years and weeping through a Day 0 game update would build character.

    Where do you stand?

I really hope the second season of Platonic explores its relationship to Invasion.

Platonic has been renewed! Given the first season ended on a pretty definitive note it will be curious to see where season two goes. I hope it immediately addresses the whole “we saw aliens” subplot by pivoting the show into being a prequel to Invasion, also on Apple TV Plus.

Instead, it will probably just continue to be a really good show about Millennials reckoning with growing old.

AI isn’t quite ready to be remastering film for 4K.

As with most things in moviemaking there’s a real art to remastering content. When it was announced that James Cameron’s True Lies was getting a proper 4K release in the U.S., folks were hopeful it would share Cameron’s knack for technical artistry.

But according to Bill Hunt over at The Digital Bits the new 4K digital release from Lightstorm used 4K scans of the original negatives that were then “optimized” with deep-learning algorithms. And AI made the film look too sharp and weird (as you can see below). A shame, given they had scans of the original negative.

Today on the Vergecast: we talked about the power of Dex.

That’s right, Dan Seifert joined the pod this week (click here to listen in your favorite podcast app) with his unhinged and totally useable Dex setup and we spent quite a bit of time talking about the dream of a phone that actually doubles as a laptop.

We also talked about Google’s big new AI, the chaos at Spotify, and even found time to talk about a few gadgets and the perils of owning digital media.

    Bing Bong!

A Baldur’s Gate 3 character is now canon. Which sounds weird right? If they’re in Baldur’s Gate 3 wouldn’t they automatically be canon? But this character actually started in Dungeons and Dragons campaign played by the Baldur’s Gate 3 voice actors (all playing in character).

The lil imp Bing Bong is joined the game officially as part of the huge patch that just dropped earlier this week. First new armor and a new epilogue, and now Bing Bong? Larian Studios is really spoiling BG3 players.
