A live action He-Man will not be in Netflix’s universe.

A new planned adaption of Masters of the Universe is dead in the water at Netflix, according to Variety. But Mattel is going to be shopping it around in the hopes that this weekend’s Barbie gets some buyers interested at another studio.

If it does get made this will actually be the second live action adaptation. The first one starred…Dolph Lundgren and Courteney Cox.

Microsoft gets Meta’s LLM models and Meta gets Satya Nadella on Threads.

Earlier today Meta made the huge announcement that it was open sourcing its large language models. That’s going to put it in direct competition with Bard, Bing, and ChatGPT. Those models will also, naturally, be coming to Windows and Azure. Something Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella celebrated in his very first post on Threads.

This week on the Vergecast we talked about the beauty of black and white phones.

Mainly the Nothing 2, because have you seen how pretty that primarily black and white UI is? It’s practically E Ink! Besides geeking out on gadgets we also talked about what FTC’s loss in the Microsoft case means for gaming, and for the FTC’s big to fix antitrust laws. It was an extremely Vergecasty Vergecast.

It’s not technically an E Ink phone but...

It is a 6-inch E Ink Android tablet. So that kind of makes the Boox Palma an E Ink phone right? The lack of a SIM tray means this won’t be replacing anyone’s iPhone, but given it initially went on sale for $250 you can bet I’ll be buying one as a secondary device to hang out in my purse.

Yes we’ve seen E Ink phones before, but this one could be different...better.

The next Godzilla movie has a name...and a teaser trailer.

Toho is back with Godzilla Minus One, the first Japanese-language Godzilla film since the wild Shin Godzilla back in 2016. This one is set in Postwar Japan and it looks like its going to be devastatingly destructive.

Steven Spielberg is getting his very own Jurassic Park action figure

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Jurassic Park Mattel is launching a whole new slew of action figures, and besides the ones you’d expect (sweaty Malcolm in the back of a Jeep, a Brachiosaurus) there’s also some unexpected ones. Including this Steven Spielberg figure that includes a little camera, chair, and murderous dinosaur. Unfortunately you’ll have to physically be at SDCC this year to get your hands on the little guy.

There’s a new FAST channel that REALLY loves the ocean.

Free ad-supported streaming TV is one of the fastest growing kinds of streaming services. Probably because people like to just watch TV without having to think about log ins or paying money. Which is why no one should be surprised there’s a new channel coming to FAST services dedicated just to the ocean.

Witness the incredible growth, and cost, of streaming’s golden era in graph form.

The golden era of streaming is coming to a close, and the Wall Street Journal has graphed out what that era looked like on paper. Notably absent are graphs on viewership—a metric streamers continue to be reluctant to give hard numbers on.

An image of a graph that shows the small net gains versus gross gains and gross cancellations. Cancellations increase steadily from 2019 to 2023.
