VW’s electric truck spinoff Scout is getting its own $2 billion factory.

The factory will be built in South Carolina and will result in the creation of 4,000 jobs, according to a tweet from Governor Henry McMaster. Scout is the classic off-road truck and SUV brand that Volkswagen is resurrecting as an EV-only marque in a bid to take on Ford, Rivian, GM and other outdoors-oriented automakers. A US-based factory will help future Scout EVs qualify for the $7,500 federal tax credit.

It’s truly wild how many EV factories are being built in the US right now, mostly in southern states too. Meanwhile, we got a closer look at Scout’s forthcoming electric pickup and SUV in a teaser post on Instagram.

Ford to restart F-150 Lightning production after battery investigation.

March 13th to be exact, according to CNBC. That’s almost a month after Ford ordered a temporary halt on production and delivery of the F-150 Lightning in response to a battery fire in one of its factory lots. There hasn’t been a formal recall, and Ford’s battery supplier is claiming innocence in the whole matter. Tensions are high around EVs and batteries, so Ford needs to be super cautious as it restarts production for its most important vehicle in its lineup.

Tesla Model Y is getting a refresh.

Reuters reports that the nearly four-year-old Model Y is getting a major update. The project, codenamed “Juniper,” would follow a similar effort to refresh the Model 3. No details yet as to what the update would entail — Reuters just says interior, exterior, and powertrain, which, let’s be real, that’s the entire car — but we could get more details later today during Tesla’s Investor Day event.

Tesla’s first ‘Master Plan’ was widely seen as a success. But the second is where things started to go off the rails. In advance of the release of the third version, let’s go through the previous two with a fine-tooth comb and assign some grades.
