I’m tired of live-service games, grandpa.

Well too damn bad! So sayeth WB CEO David Zaslav during Wednesday’s earnings call in which he said the company will focus on offering games that have “more always on gameplay through live services, multiplatform, and free-to-play extensions.”

It’s an interesting stance considering one of the company’s most recent live-service offerings, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, is on its fifty ‘leventh delay following a less than enthused reception. Meanwhile, highly-rated single-player games like Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Spider-Man 2, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom are dominating the sales charts.

TimeSplitters developer is the next victim of Embracer Group’s hubris.

Free Radical Design is the next studio affected by Embracer Group’s slow implosion after a $2 billion deal fell through earlier this year. The studio had been re-established to work on a TimeSplitters reboot, and according to VGC, a number of employees have already been let go with the studio itself subject to closure if Embracer can’t find a suitable buyer.

Wake up, get up, get out there... a little too soon.

Persona 5 Tactica, Atlus’ latest entry in its “we’re gonna do everything but release Persona 6” experiment, is due out November 17th. But eagled-eyed Phantom Thieves noticed that the game was available on Steam today for a brief moment with some able to purchase, download, and play it already.

Now that the game has escaped containment a week early, be vigilant for spoilers.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

A new graph, courtesy of Axios, shows just how amazing 2023 has been for video games. The year has the highest number of games boasting a Metacritic score of 90 or better in the last twenty years. Yes, this is based on aggregated critic scores but based on what we’ve seen this year, this tracks.

But it’s really hard, impossible even, to celebrate all these good-ass games when the people who’re making them keep getting laid off amidst one of best years the industry has ever seen creatively.

Image of a graph illustrating the number of games with a Metacritic score of 90 plotted over the years 2004-2023. 2023 has the highest number of games over that period.

Damn, it feels good to be a gangsta.

You could be forgiven for thinking the Yakuza series was nothing more than a slice-of-life, coming-of-age comedy about a bunch serious-faced dudes navigating life in Kamurocho, Japan. And the new trailer for Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth continues to do nothing to disabuse you of that notion.

The trailer highlights Dondoko Island, a new location where Ichiban and the gang can take a break from all the serious yakuza-ing they do to build houses, fish, sing karaoke, and more.
