30 organizations call for an end to Android developer registration.

The likes of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Open Rights Group signed an open letter from the Keep Android Open project in opposition to developer registration, which opens next month and will be mandatory from September. The group’s Marc Prud’hommeaux explains why:

“We’ve been reaching out to Google for months to implore them to reverse course on this lockdown. The implications of their threatened action for competition and digital sovereignty are dire.”

Who keeps the safety researchers safe?

Look, it’s never nice to laugh at someone’s misfortune. But when a Meta AI safety researcher puts on a public demonstration of AI safety risks using their personal email as collateral, I think we should all take a moment to enjoy it.

    Dkfkhfkwkdnc:

Hang this in the museum. An AI safety researcher pleading with a robot known for being unsafe to not delete her inbox. Sign of many wonderful things to come.

Trump’s new tariffs just kicked in.

They’ve been applied using powers under the Trade Act of 1974, circumventing both Congress and the recent Supreme Court ruling that Trump’s previous tariffs were illegal. The president had threatened a higher 15 percent rate, but so far Customs and Border Protection has only announced 10 percent tariffs, which will last 150 days.

    The other chip crisis.

Thought RAMageddon was bad? Wait until Silicon Valley loses access to 90 percent of the world’s chip supply. The New York Times reminds us that’s a possibility, with production concentrated in Taiwan, ever at risk of a Chinese blockade. The industry is now investing in US production, but has been putting this off for years.

    A slow update cycle.

MIDI was introduced in 1983, and hit version 2.0 back in 2020, an update cadence we think more of the industry should aspire to.

    porkbun:

The MIDI folk kept the same version number for 43 years. HDMI could never.

    Honor is pivoting to robots.

The Chinese smartphone company says it will reveal a humanoid robot at MWC this week, which I’m told will focus on domestic tasks. It’s a big change for the company, even with the Robot Phone also on the way, but makes more sense when you know it has an IPO in its future.

    An early S26 Ultra.

YouTuber Sahil Karoul claims to have bought a Galaxy S26 Ultra early at a market in Dubai, and is slowly revealing all: camera samples, benchmarks, and confirmation that the S Pen doesn’t include Bluetooth. Most interesting is this look at the new Privacy display in action ahead of the official reveal this Wednesday.

WhatsApp helps you catch the group chat up.

It’s rolling out Group Message History, which lets group chat admins (and members, depending on permissions) share the most recent messages with new members of a chat. That should make it easier to catch people up without blasting old messages back to the whole group.
