Matt Levine has some thoughts about Reddit offering its stock to Redditors.

There are rumors the Reddit IPO is happening soon. Some of the most active Redditors may get the opportunity to buy in at the IPO price. Is a new meme stock in the making? Maybe!

In the 2020s, some companies are owned in large part by retail investors, and some of those investors are more interested in being part of an online community of investors, and trading jokes and memes, than they are in financial analysis. And you can make those investors happy in less traditional ways, like by giving them popcorn or buying a gold mine or doing a YouTube interview with no pants on.

Who is Madame Web? “Mostly, she is a normal woman who hits people with her car. “

Here’s JP Brammer on Madame Web’s appeal:

Madame Web is about PepsiCo Inc. There are multiple instances of unabashed product placement for Pepsi. Madame Web is not shy about reminding the audience about the crisp, refreshing taste of Pepsi.

It’s also about carjacking. The cars she hits people with do not belong to her.

I cannot emphasize enough how trash this movie is. As someone whose last movie before the pandemic was Cats, I urge you to check it out.

“Human leg found abandoned on a New York subway track.”

We don’t know whether the leg came from a man or woman, nor do we know how old the leg is. We do know, however, that “a human leg has been found abandoned on a New York subway track, police said, sparking an investigation into who it once belonged to and how they lost it.”

“Human leg found abandoned.” “Human leg found abandoned.” “Human leg found abandoned.” “Human leg found abandoned on a New York subway track.”

Better use up your JetBlue miles quickly...

...because Carl Icahn is on the board now. I expect the flying experience is about to get a lot more unpleasant in the name of maximizing shareholder value.

    Mark Zuckerberg, VR influencer.

Hey, you know Zuck’s video review of the Vision Pro? Katie Notopoulos noticed! Here’s the nut:

I don’t attempt to think too hard about Mark Zuckerberg’s inner life, but I don’t get the sense that what we’re seeing is a window into his soul. This is a business strategy.

I think Zuckerberg noticed posting worked well for Elon Musk for a decade, and decided to do a media-trained version of it. That didn’t work for Jeff Bezos, though.

At least in Canada, companies are responsible when their customer service chatbots lie to their customer.

A man was booking an Air Canada flight and asked for a reduced rate because of bereavement. The chatbot assured him this was possible — the reduced fare would be a rebate. When he went to submit the rebate, the airline refused to refund him.

In February of 2023, Moffatt sent the airline a screenshot of his conversation with the chatbot and received a response in which Air Canada “admitted the chatbot had provided ‘misleading words.’”

He took the airline to court and won.

Airbus and Boeing are building the biggest overhead bins they can.

Sure, the checked bag fees play a role in the lack of overhead bin space but they aren’t the whole story! The rise in hardsided cases that can’t squish, as well as too-large or oddly-shaped luggage, contribute to the problem. So does traveler impatience.

Two experts told The Atlantic what I’ve already told you: Check a bag, you glamorous beast.

I wonder if this is a good thing for brick and mortar!

One of the things that makes online shopping possible is returns: since you can’t try on an item before you buy, that means gambling on sizing. And 40 percent of sales for some online retailers result in returns. Returned items don’t necessarily get resold, making them costly for vendors, some of whom are now banning frequent fliers.

    Slackers

A decade later, it’s clear that Slack changed work culture, even at companies that don’t use it.
