During the Maui wildfires, Lahaina’s water system failed.

Firefighters battling in Hawaii contended with fire hydrants that ran dry:

One firefighter described how his truck tapped into a hydrant to try and contain a blaze that had taken root in a cluster of homes, only to find water pressure so weak that the fire promptly jumped beyond their efforts to contain it. Another firefighter who arrived on scene after the fire was already raging said he encountered a scene of chaos and soon was told that there was no water to put the fires out. Crews were forced to focus on evacuations, he said, picking up people who were stranded and pointing others toward the fastest routes to safety.

Finally, some measure of justice for Henrietta Lacks’ family.

Lack was a Black cancer patient whose cells were sampled by doctors without her permission. Her cells, called the HeLa line, led to numerous scientific advances, but her family never received compensation. Today is her 103rd birthday.

“There couldn’t have been a more fitting day for her to have justice, for her family to have relief,” her grandson said. “It was a long fight — over 70 years — and Henrietta Lacks gets her day.”

Details of her family’s settlement with Thermo Fisher Scientific weren’t disclosed.
