Google Classroom can automatically remind students about upcoming assignments.

New updates coming “soon” to Google Classroom will let teachers notify students about homework due dates right on the home screens of their Chromebooks.

Those Chromebooks should also last longer, as Google announced last year that it will provide 10 years of automatic updates to Chromebooks, but only for laptops bought in 2021 or later. That, unfortunately, doesn’t cover Chromebooks bought in 2020 at the start of the pandemic, which are now breaking down or reaching their end-of-life expiration dates.

Microsoft is building a team to build smaller, cheaper AI models.

The Information reports the new GenAI team will focus on developing smaller language models (SLMs) that are similar to LLMs like OpenAI’s GPT-4 but use less computing power. Microsoft spent hundreds of millions on chips for one supercomputer to run AI models, so any saving helps.

The GenAI team will be led by Microsoft corporate vice president Misha Bilenko and report to Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott.

Correction January 26th, 2024, 10:08AM ET: The Information has updated its earlier report, which said this will be part of the Azure cloud unit. It will in fact report to Microsoft’s CTO Kevin Scott.

IBM will help Spanish football team Sevilla find new players with AI.

IBM built Scout Adviser, a platform that will analyze Sevilla FC’s database of potential recruits. Using natural language processing and foundation models, it will create a list of players it thinks Sevilla should tap based on the team’s needs. IBM said it will look at several factors when evaluating recruits:

This includes both quantitative data such as height and weight, speed, number of goals or minutes played, and qualitative unstructured data such as the textual analysis contained in their more than 200,000 scouting reports.

But Sevilla won’t be relying on AI alone. The football club will continue to rely on scouts and analysts as well.
