I know what you’re thinking: RentAHitman.com is obviously run by the FBI.

Turns out, it’s not — it’s just a gag website from a guy who uses the pseudonym Guido Fanelli. But Guido is in contact with the FBI, and you would not believe how many people have been arrested because of it.

    Confirming, that is Tim Cook.

Apple’s CEO was spotted at Coachella this weekend alongside Apple Music leader Eddy Cue. Apparently he’s something of a regular. Do you think he stuck around for Frank Ocean?

Of course Jony Ive made his own font.

LoveFrom, Ive’s design firm, has a custom typeface called LoveFrom Serif. It was revealed on the agency’s website a couple years ago, but I just found out about it today when looking at the Steve Jobs ebook, which features this note at the end.

“Designed by LoveFrom. Typeset in LoveFrom Serif.”

Top Secret government documents are getting leaked on Discord.

InfoSec in 2023 is in a strange place. The leaked (and altered) security files on Ukraine that have been floating around seem to have emerged out of a series of Discord servers. Bellingcat says the trail leads through a Discord server focused on Minecraft and a Filipino YouTuber:

After a brief spat with another person on the server about Minecraft Maps and the war in Ukraine, one of the Discord users replied “here, have some leaked documents” – attaching 10 documents about Ukraine, some of which bore the “Top Secret” markings.

The latest twitch-based video game: chess.

Magnus Carlsen, the reigning world chess champion, lost a game yesterday after his mouse slipped and he placed his queen on the wrong square. Carlsen had under 30 seconds on the clock and was racing to checkmate Hikaru Nakamura, the popular streamer and grandmaster who’s known for his command in speed formats.

(The board is delayed from the players’ reactions in the video below; the slip happens at :24 when Carlsen, playing white, moves his queen to a square where Nakamura’s king promptly takes it.)

Glass Onion’s film grain had to be changed for streaming.

The movie’s cinematographer, Steve Yedlin, told Vulture that there are actually two versions of the film: a grainier version for theaters and a toned down version for Netflix.

The grain was making the image look crummy. You could see really big compression blocks and swimmy stuff. There are actually different settings that would’ve made the grain in the theatrical version of Glass Onion look fine, but Netflix can’t change their settings just to make one show or movie look better.

Turns out, Netflix has a special system just for streaming film grain.

Elon found another bill to cut.

The New York Times says Twitter has more-or-less ended negotiations with the big music labels for licensing deals that would have covered any music that was uploaded by users. Most social networks have agreements like this, but Twitter doesn’t.

An agreement could have cost “well over $100 million a year,” the Times reports. So it’s no wonder Musk bailed on negotiations — he isn’t even fond of paying rent right now.

Spotify is holding a big event today.

And CEO Daniel Ek is already teasing the news: a “completely redesigned” home feed. Maybe this is the rumored TikTok-style approach we keep hearing about.

The event kicks off at 1PM ET / 10AM PT. We’ll be reporting back with all the news.
