“Alexa Plus” may be a smarter version of Amazon’s voice assistant that you pay for.

While the new Alexa voice technology (dubbed “Remarkable Alexa”) is supposedly scheduled for a June 30th launch, a report from Business Insider cites sources who say early testing with 15,000 customers has not gone well.

Apparently, Alexa is “often giving unnecessarily long or inaccurate responses.” I am all for a smarter Alexa, but a hallucinating Alexa could be downright dangerous.

Amazon showed off some of what it planned for Alexa and generative AI at its hardware event last fall, where Dave Limp hinted it might come with a price tag.

LG’s other transparent TV is the one I want in my living room.

LG’s DukeBox is pitched as a modern-day jukebox, but in person, it’s got much more potential.

A smooth-sounding 3D audio speaker with a 30-inch transparent OLED display that lets you see its retro-style insides and displays album art, the DukeBox is also a TV.

The music controls on the screen are just for show — it’s not a touch screen. But if LG ever ships this concept product it should totally be one. It would make a gorgeous smart display.

Samsung’s Map View looks sweet on that big smart display, I mean ... television.

I totally believe TVs should also be smart displays for controlling your smart home; it just makes sense. So, I was intrigued to check out the new Now Plus dashboard screen, Map View, and Quick Access controls for SmartThings on Samsung TVs at CES this week.

The three new interfaces were colorful and responsive in the demo (you control them with the TV remote). And the Quick Access Panel looks super handy. (It will also look very familiar to Apple TV users.)

The Now Plus screen surfaces cards with different data; here, it’s weather, smart home devices, cameras, and energy use. You can click on each one to see more and access controls.
A Quick Access screen pops up over what you’re watching, and you see camera feeds and control favorite devices.
The Map View shows your home layout and where devices are and you can select to filter by device type.
Filtering by temperature shows the temperature in each room.
Same with air quality.
Filtering by camera shows a recent snapshot over each device.

Is it a bird, is it a plane, or is it a $2,500 faucet?

“Disrupt the bathroom faucet” was not on my CES bingo card, but on giant orange plinths in the middle of Kohler’s booth was the most bizarre-looking bathroom tap I’ve ever seen.

Kohler’s new angular, very orange, limited-edition Formation 01 faucet is a “revolutionary” new bathroom fixture, according to Wallpaper Magazine.

That’s a stretch; it’s just a tap — it doesn’t do anything fancy, it’s not even smart. But full points for trying something new, Kohler!

LG’s smart home robot is kinda cute and kinda useless.

Its new AI Agent may have Rosey the Robot aspirations — but do you need a robot with “personality” to control smart home devices and clean up after your cat?

I saw a demo of the Agent at CES, and as charming as it is — with its big eyes and headphone ears (it’s a handle; one of the crew picked it up by it when it got stuck) — it doesn’t seem to do much that a stationary AI voice assistant couldn’t.

Those “legs” are just for dancing, and without arms, it’s not going to be taking out the trash or emptying the dishwasher. But then again, dancing might just be enough!
