Got a long drive this week? Interested in whether Matter will ever really work?

Then queue up this two-hour interview with Daniel Moneta in your podcast app.

Moneta, who has worked for Google Home and Samsung SmartThings, is the chair of the CSA’s Marketing and Product group. So it’s his job to explain how Matter works, and he’s very good at it. He turned the hardened HomeTech.fm hosts into true believers following this interview.

As I’ve discussed, Matter has a lot of problems, but it’s encouraging to hear how they are working on solving them.

2023 in the smart home: Matter’s broken promises

The new smart home standard finally arrived this year. But poor implementation, significant backpedaling, and glacial progress have left it broken.

Home Assistant gets some respect from Silicon Labs.

The much-loved open-sourced home automation platform Home Assistant is finally getting a seat at the table.

Its parent company, Nabu Casa, announced it’s partnering with Silicon Labs, one of the main chip makers for smart home devices (and the only Z-Wave chip maker).

Home Assistant builds Z-Wave JS, the only open-source driver for Z-Wave. This partnership basically means it will get the kind of priority support normally reserved for companies that buy a lot of chips, which should translate into more stable smart homes for us. Yay.

Lutron Caseta smart switches can finally turn themselves off with a timer.

My favorite smart switches are getting a useful upgrade (one they should’ve already had!). A new Auto-Off Timer in the Lutron app lets you set the switches to turn off a set amount of time after turning them on.

This is handy for shutting off bathroom fans or lights in closets without the need to add an additional sensor or set up an automation through a third-party platform.

Wi-Fi switches from companies like Tapo, Leviton, and Meross already have this feature, but it’s good news that it’s coming to the ultra-reliable Caseta line.

<em>The Auto-Off Timer feature is new to the Lutron app.</em>
<em>You can set a switch to turn off automatically after a set amount of time with no other input needed.</em>
<em>Switches with Auto-Timers set will show a timer icon on the app home page.</em>

This smart mixer did not make me a better baker

The $800 GE Profile Smart Mixer improves on the category — but not enough to justify its high price tag and hefty size.
