HMD has been producing phones for years under the Nokia brand name, but now a promotional initiative is obviously in order as it prepares to launch its first HMD-branded device. At least, that’s my read on its new ad centered around explaining that “HMD” stands for “Human Mobile Devices.”
Yes, it’s definitely strange seeing HMD kick off a brand awareness campaign for its seven year-old brand.
The co-founder donated two million shares (about 40 percent of his direct holdings) to Silicon Valley Community Foundation. The Wall Street Journal notes that the charity is popular with tech founders with over $10 billion in assets at the close of 2022. Donors see an immediate tax benefit (like avoiding payment of capital-gains tax) but funds can ultimately “sit for years” before being distributed.

Supply chain analysis from Omdia’s Hiroshi Hayase suggests Nintendo’s next console, widely expected to launch later this year, will have a bigger screen than both the original Switch (6.2-inches) and the OLED model (7-inches), Bloomberg reports. That lines up with VGC’s previous reporting about the LCD display. Developers reportedly saw demos of the new Switch last year, and Activision was briefed on it as early as 2022.
