Spammy Russia-based accounts explode on Meta platforms but aren’t gaining as much traction.

Meta has found a growing number of accounts and pages linked to coordinated inauthentic behavior (CIB) from Russia, but they’re not gaining as many followers as before, the company said in a new report.

Since 2022, Meta wrote, “we’ve seen fewer attempts to build complex deceptive personas in favor of thinly-disguised, short-lived fake accounts in an effort to spam the internet, hoping something will ‘stick.’”

But Meta has noted “a consistent decline” in following of these kinds of accounts.

Microsoft’s recent layoffs contradict what the company promised of its merger, the FTC says.

The Federal Trade Commission complained to a federal appeals court on Wednesday that Microsoft’s layoff of 1,900 employees in its video games division went against its representations in court as it fought to acquire Activision Blizzard.

The move undermines Microsoft’s claims that the companies would continue to operate independently, the FTC said, and will make it harder to get “effective relief” if the agency succeeds in its administrative proceeding.

A new tool to use against people posting child sexual abuse material on the internet.

PIR, the group that runs the .org domain, announced a new partnership to sponsor free access for groups that run top-level domains (TLDs) — think .com, .net, etc. — to the Internet Watch Foundation’s TLD Hopping List and Domain Alerts.

With free access to both features, they can quickly shut down a website if CSAM is detected, and that site also can’t easily go and register the same name with another domain provider. They’re seeking to increase the number of subscribed TLDs from a dozen to over a thousand.

Google will face another antitrust trial September 9th, this time over ad tech.

The company will face off in federal court against the US Department of Justice in Virginia, after the DOJ claimed in January 2023 that Google violated US antitrust law by illegally monopolizing the digital ads market, allegedly boosting its profits while raising costs for advertisers. Google has said the DOJ’s reasoning “would slow innovation, raise advertising fees and make it harder for thousands of small businesses and publishers to grow.”

The ad tech trial will be Google’s second match-up against the DOJ in an antitrust case in a year, following a trial over its search business beginning last September. The parties will deliver closing arguments there in the coming months.

The CEOs can take a deep breath.

The hearing just came to a close. Durbin wrapped the discussion by telling Zuckerberg he doesn’t think his opening statement about the positive mental health impacts of social media makes any sense. Durbin said social media’s negative impact on kids is evident to all parents.

Graham added that he hopes “something positive” will come from the hearing. Some of the senators are holding press conferences to follow up — I’m headed to one now.
