The top two lawmakers on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and Ranking Member Frank Pallone (D-NJ), proposed a new bill to sunset Section 230 protections for the tech industry. It would give Congress about 18 months to create a new framework to replace the legal liability shield for user-generated content, or lose the protection entirely.
Sens. Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) J.D. Vance (R-OH), Peter Welch (D-VT), Roger Wicker (R-MS), Steve Daines (R-MT), and Jacky Rosen (D-NV) are pushing for an amendment to the Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill to create more funding for the Affordable Connectivity Program. It would tighten eligibility for the subsidy, but would keep it from running out of money just yet.

Fifty-seven-year-old James Smelko of Pittsburgh was sentenced to 14 years and seven months in prison for possessing deepfake child sexual abuse material of child stars. The sentencing comes as legislatures are racing to deal with the issue of deepfake CSAM and how AI companies are trying to ensure CSAM isn’t used to train their models.
