Vice President Kamala Harris will be holding a “frank discussion” on responsible AI with the companies’ CEOs on Thursday. At least a dozen Biden administration officials are expected to join them.
I wouldn’t expect any big changes to come out of tomorrow’s meeting — it’s probably more of an opportunity for the White House to show the AI industry that they’re paying attention.
The Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission, along with two other regulatory agencies, are warning companies that they don’t need new laws to start regulating AI:
“Each agency here today has legal authorities to readily combat AI-driven harm,” FTC Chair Lina Khan said. “Firms should be on notice that systems that bolster fraud or perpetuate unlawful bias can violate the FTC Act. There is no AI exemption to the laws on the books.
Even before the generative AI boom of this year, Khan had told companies that biased AI tools, especially when applied in areas like housing or employment, could be illegal.
The stunning news comes less than a week after the conservative network reached a $787 million settlement with Dominion Voting Systems. While the settlement averted a high-profile court trial over false 2020 election claims, it also kept some of Fox’s biggest names, like Carlson, from being forced to testify.
As of Monday afternoon, it’s unclear what exactly led to Carlson’s departure, but it sure looked like the now former host expected to have a show tonight.
