Google will make Pixel 8s in India, too.

Google Pixel 8 phones manufactured in India will start to roll out next year. Google’s move is similar to what we’ve seen from Apple, which started producing iPhones there in 2017 as it diversified its production line beyond China. This year, for the first time, it had India-manufactured iPhone 15s for sale at launch.

Google didn’t say how many devices will be built there, but a report last year from The Information said it was soliciting bids from companies to build between 500k and 1 million devices, which could be as much as 20 percent of its estimated total.

    The Twitter Fantasy.

It’s been almost a year since Elon Musk took over Twitter and, well, a lot of things have happened since then. Now, after previously diving into the backstories of dating apps, Meta, and Tesla, the Vox Media podcast Land of the Giants launches a new season about Twitter, its richest user, and “why Twitter’s cultural and political influence far exceeds its size,” hosted by Peter Kafka.

New episodes will arrive weekly starting on October 25th, and you can subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or other podcast apps.

CNBC digs into the Silk Road thief who was caught ten years later with $3 billion in stolen crypto.

A year ago, the DOJ announced it recovered more than 50k Bitcoin stolen from the Silk Road market in 2012 and that James Zhong had pleaded guilty to the crime.

CNBC’s 30-minute report uncovers how they found him (he moved $800 in Bitcoin to an account registered under his real name) and shows body camera footage of cops investigating his house while pretending to pursue a thief who’d broken in and stole some crypto. That person’s identity is still unknown.

Is it too late to protect our privacy?

Kashmir Hill, author of the book Your Face Belongs to Us and “not a privacy nihilist,” spoke to Nilay on Decoder about whether or not we can do anything about the rise of a facial recognition-enabled dystopian world.

Forza Motorsport’s first big update makes it easier to upgrade your cars.

I liked the game’s new progression system, which requires players to actually drive the cars they own in order to unlock upgraded parts, but tweaks are appreciated. The 1.0 update released today makes it much easier to unlock upgrades, with Turn10 saying that now “most” parts should be able to be unlocked within a single Builders’ Cup series.

Unfortunately, there’s still no DLSS 3 support for PC players, and if anyone has fully figured out the penalty system, please let me know?

NBC’s new sports streaming service serves up your kid’s games instead of the NFL.

Netflix isn’t the only one with sports streaming news — NBC Sports has announced SportsEngine Play, which offers free live streams of youth and amateur sporting events.

The idea is that events can broadcast to the platform from a phone, a pro camera setup, or anything in between, which interested viewers can log in and watch for free. Paid $9.99 per month plans add access to replays, shareable highlights, and access to “premium” events.

Disclosure: Comcast, which owns NBCUniversal, is also an investor in Vox Media, The Verge’s parent company.

Binance.US says its users can’t directly withdraw their crypto holdings in cash.

CoinDesk notes that Binance.US just updated its terms of service, saying users can only withdraw funds in the form of stablecoins or other crypto instead of US dollars. Oh, and that US dollar funds in Binance.US wallets are not protected by FDIC insurance.

Earlier this year the SEC sued Binance, alleging it “defrauded equity, retail, and institutional investors about purported surveillance and controls over manipulative trading on the Binance.US Platform, which were in fact virtually nonexistent.”

While you wait for the next Liz Lopatto report on the Sam Bankman-Fried / FTX fraud case, you can relive her live reading of the SEC’s case against Binance from this summer.

Samsung adds Batteries Plus as a source of in-warranty repairs for Galaxy phones.

Now Samsung has another list of outlets among the 2,000 authorized service centers for its slabs and multiple foldables, with the announcement today that this fall, 35 Batteries Plus stores will have the Samsung Authorized Service Center tag, similar to its arrangements with uBreakiFix and Best Buy.

Since 2018, Batteries Plus has been part of Samsung’s Independent Service Provider (ISP) program, primarily handling out-of-warranty repairs. Now, these 35 stores will be able to address in-warranty repairs as well as service more device types, like foldables.

Galaxy owners can schedule repair appointments through either BatteriesPlus.com or the service locator on Samsung.com, and the company says these locations were selected to cover areas where there aren’t already Samsung services centers.

    AWS in space?

Amazon streamlined logistics for moving goods, and Amazon Web Services does the same for many operations on the internet. Now, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin space venture has announced (in a brief post not much longer than this one) a familiar approach for its Blue Ring spacecraft platform and In-Space Systems business unit, built to support missions “in medium Earth orbit out to the cislunar region and beyond.”

The platform provides end-to-end services that span hosting, transportation, refueling, data relay, and logistics, including an “in-space” cloud computing capability. Blue Ring can host payloads of more than 3,000 kg and provides unprecedented delta-V capabilities and mission flexibility.
