The “In Real Life” app is shutting down because it “it didn’t have real users.”

When we checked out IRL in 2021, the company claimed to have 12 million monthly active users, and The Information reports that lately, it’s put the number at 20 million. Now, the outlet reports, the board of directors of the Softbank-backed company has concluded 95 percent of those were fake. A spokesperson said it will shut down and return capital to shareholders.

IRL’s founder and CEO Abraham Shahi has been suspended for the last two months for the alleged misconduct.

James Cameron’s perspective on the Titan implosion as a member of the “submergence community.”

Director James Cameron has given another interview, had a lot to say to CNN about the Titan, including that there’s an indication the sub dumped ballast and started to ascend before ever reaching the sea floor. He also apparently knew of the implosion sounds picked up by Navy listening devices as early as Monday.

However, despite OceanGate’s claims that they could detect any problems in the carbon fiber-based hull using “real-time (RTM) hull health monitoring,” Cameron said that well-known issues with composite materials and the risks of progressive degradation made it the wrong choice for constructing a submersible.

Kids are allegedly stealing NFTs worth millions to buy digital items they actually want.

The Block cites a source who claims to know the people behind recent phishing attacks with “NFT drainers” targeting high-value accounts. According to OpenSea employee “Plum,” it’s high school kids who “all play Roblox for the most part. So they’ll buy the coolest gear for their Roblox avatar, video games, skins and things like that.”

A fruit farmer’s organization in Switzerland is worried Apple’s going too far with recent trademark requests.

Wired writes about Apple attempting to secure IP rights for “a realistic, black-and-white depiction of an apple variety known as the Granny Smith,” how that’s part of a long list of similar requests made worldwide, and what it could mean for other companies with apples in their logos (via Techmeme).

Fruit Union Suisse director Jimmy Mariéthoz:

Their objective here is really to own the rights to an actual apple, which, for us, is something that is really almost universal … that should be free for everyone to use

Carl Pei teases a see-through USB-C cable for the Nothing Phone 2.

The slow drip-feed of rumors and details about Nothing’s next phone continues, with exec Carl Pei tweeting a photo of a USB-C cable (only the ends are clear, which is a little disappointing) that we expect to see debut with the Phone 2 on July 11th.

You know we love transparent gadgets, and while a cable is pretty basic hardware, now that Beats has stepped up to match Nothing’s clear earbuds, it has to do more.

UWB, Wi-Fi 7 upgrades for future iPhones could help them work with the Vision Pro.

In a pair of tweets, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple would “aggressively” upgrade hardware specs with an eye to the ecosystem around its $3,499 headset.

That includes bumping the iPhone 15’s ultra-wideband (UWB) chip to a new 7nm process and a likely update to Wi-Fi 7 on the iPhone 16. Wi-Fi 7 devices should support faster mesh networking features and lower in-home latency. Qualcomm has said it will enable “peak speeds up to 5.8 Gbps” to a single device.
