A massive AWS outage is breaking a few things, but we’re still here

AWS US-EAST-1 Region is having some issues, which are preventing The Verge homepage from updating and possibly interrupting many other internet services you’re trying to use. (Shout out to our own Mitchell Clark, who alerted us to this outage while hiking the 2,600-mile Pacific Crest Trail because the Burger King app was failing.)

Of course, we’re still working and publishing and will have more news for you, including the latest updates on the Reddit blackout.

Update: We found a workaround! The Verge homepage continues, even if AWS doesn’t.

Some of Sony’s 2022 TVs will get updated with the game menu that’s in 2023 models.

Sony’s 2023 lineup of TVs will include a special game menu, similar to the ones companies like Samsung, LG, and others already have

Now a video on its YouTube channel says that feature is coming to X80K and higher TVs from the 2022 lineup, while certain models going back to 2020 will get updated with an Eco Dashboard to control power-saving settings. It’d be nice to see the updates available more widely, but that’s the list, for now.

Google’s EU antitrust problem is about to get worse.

According to a report from Bloomberg, the EU’s antitrust investigation into Google’s ad tech business will result in a formal complaint that could be filed by Wednesday.

EU executive vice president Margaret Vestager said last year that the case — originally opened in 2021is looking at behaviors that seem anti-competitive. The list of charges would take aim at Google’s core business, which the report notes pulled in $225 billion last year.

One more time on the Vision Pro.

Apple’s new headset made the splashiest debut during WWDC 2023, so don’t miss Nilay Patel telling you (outside of podcasts, editorials, and comments) what it’s like to wear one before the Vision Pro is released early next year.

Elon Musk still hasn’t paid Twitter’s Google Cloud bill.

And as Zoë Schiffer writes, that could unplug tools used to stop spam, harassment, and CSAM. The Information reported in March that bills for AWS and Google Cloud were stacking up as Twitter tried to renegotiate. A May Bloomberg report said at least ten lawsuits had been filed against Twitter for nonpayment since Musk took over.

Now, Schiffer says that unless they pay up or work something out, its access could be cut off on June 30th when their contract ends.

Elon Musk is talking about splitting ad revenue with creators on Twitter again.

Getting paid by Twitter requires three things: You have to pay Twitter for Twitter Blue, the advertiser has to pay Twitter to show the ad, and the person viewing the ad also has to pay for Twitter Blue.

How much can you make? Musk and his new CEO Linda Yaccarino didn’t say. Anyway, here’s a look at the Twitter competitor that’s coming soon from Instagram.

“When a DAO comes into contact with general partnership law, something bad happens.”

That was said by our EIC Nilay Patel on an episode of the podcast Decoder last year about decentralized autonomous organizations.

Now, a lawsuit won by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) against something called Ooki DAO establishes that these crypto-era decentralized finance (DeFi) orgs can be held liable for breaking the law.

CFTC Division of Enforcement Director Ian McGinley:

The founders created the Ooki DAO with an evasive purpose, and with the explicit goal of operating an illegal trading platform without legal accountability.

This decision should serve as a wake-up call to anyone who believes they can circumvent the law by adopting a DAO structure, intending to insulate themselves from law enforcement and ultimately putting the public at risk.

From SoundCloud to the cover of Billboard.

Kaytranada did make a few stops in between, with Grammy wins and Grammy losses (to Beyoncé), his 2016 debut album 99.9%, and the Wiz-inspired Coachella show a few weeks ago.

But before he was a magazine cover story, most of us found out about “Kaytradamus” from his SoundCloud remixes.

A five-minute teaser for Marvel’s Secret Invasion series awaits, if you jump through one hoop.

With the next MCU series set for a Disney Plus debut on June 21st, the marketing for Secret Invasion is winding up, but with a spy twist this time. Instead of just dropping yet another trailer, it’s stored on this dedicated site that requests a password (RSD3PX5N7S), which is conveniently listed in the tweet.

Figuring out which characters are Skrulls in hiding will hopefully be a little harder than that.
