That’s what just happened at Framework. The modular laptop company just got Intel to certify that its latest USB-C / USB4 ports satisfy all the requirements of Thunderbolt 4 too, letting you set your mind at ease that you’ll get 100W of power, 40Gbps data rates, and up to 8K 60 external monitors via DisplayPort.
Of course, Framework was already advertising those things cuz its expansion cards could already do all that — nothing is stopping USB4 mfgrs from building in the same capabilities as Thunderbolt 4. It’s just that many manufacturers don’t, and Thunderbolt is one way to prove you did. (Tho even Thunderbolt doesn’t guarantee eGPU support.)
