Somebody talk me out of buying a $40 dongle to control my standing desk with Home Assistant over Wi-Fi.

    Oops, too late.

If your PC needs more memory, now might be the time.

Forspoken wants 24GB. Returnal originally quoted 32GB. Chrome will devour all the RAM you have in classic Ron Swanson fashion.

Luckily, memory prices have been sinking and many kits are at all-time lows. That might not last, though. I buried this info a bit too much in my Forspoken blog, so here’s a Verge Quick Post as well!

Correction, January 18th: Sony has now changed Returnal’s recommended spec to just 16GB.

Don’t worry, the 14-inch MacBook Pro also has longer battery life this year.

Why didn’t Apple mention the new 14-inch MBP’s battery during its 19-minute preso? My guess: Apple couldn’t say “the longest battery life ever in a Mac” because it’s actually shorter than the “20 hours” of the battery champ 13-inch.

Still, both the new 14-inch and 16-inch claim to offer an extra hour over their M1 Pro predecessors, and the testing methodology hasn’t changed. I’m guessing we’ll get 11 hours from the 14-inch this year.

The Sony Walkman is alive and looks fantastic.

“I have no use for a standalone music player, but both of these Walkmans are so pretty that I just want to hold one,” writes Ars Technica’s Ron Amadeo. Hard agree.

LG is recalling 56,000 of its giant 86-inch TVs.

Nobody has reported an injury yet, but the 100-pound televisions can — and have — tipped over when using their optional stand legs. You can contact LG to get a free repair and free replacement parts.

Twitter clients like Tweetbot just stopped working.

Even Tweetbot developer Paul Haddad doesn’t know what’s going on. Speculation is that Musk is pulling the plug on third-party apps, but nothing’s for certain yet.

Twitter still does not have a comms department for us to ask.

The engineers out-nerfing Nerf have another blaster for your blaster.

In 2021, I profiled Out of Darts, calling them “the foam-slinging equivalent of James Bond’s gadget armorer Q.” Their latest gadget is the Herja, a fully-automatic flywheeler you can bolt onto another blaster so you’re never cornered without ammo.

It’s $90 for a DIY kit or $190 for a fully-assembled blaster. That’s definitely going on my birthday wishlist.
