Google says Sundar didn’t actually entertain the idea of splitting off AI from search.

On Google’s Q3 earnings call, Wells Fargo analyst Ken Gawrelski asked:

Why doesn’t it make sense to have two completely different search experiences? One, an agent-like answers engine and then, two, a links-based more traditional search engine? You could innovate on both and let the consumer decide.

Sundar replied: “I do think having two surfaces for us allows us to experiment more.”

But Google rep Chris Pappas tells us he’s referring to two different AI surfaces — AI Overviews and the Gemini App — not good ol’ link-based search.

Today I learned AMD is sending chips to space, powering new SpaceX Starlink internet satellites.

Did you know SpaceX’s “latest generation broadband satellites” use AMD chips? The chipmaker just bragged about that in Q3 2024 earnings, and it’s news to me.

AMD’s product page says: “AMD Versal Adaptive SoCs combine application processors, real-time processors, and vector processors with traditional FPGA resources such as programmable logic fabric, DSP resources, and embedded memory.”

AMD’s AI earnings continue to rise, while game console fortunes continue to decline.

New PlayStations and Xboxes can’t come soon enough — Q3 gaming revenue is $462M, down from $648M last quarter and $922M before that, “primarily due to a decrease in semi-custom revenue.”

But Q3 earnings are up on the AI boom, once again pulling in double the data center dollars they did last year. No wonder AMD’s now prioritizing AI over gaming.

The Google Home-Spotify casting outage is over.

Android Police writes that it took less than 24 hours for Google to fix the issue, partly thanks to a particularly concerted effort on the part of Google Home users. Also: today I learned there’s a dedicated Google smart home gadget feedback form.

‘Yikes’: Is Elon Musk bragging about his Diablo prowess or his SpaceX near-miss?

Okay, this one’s weird: Musk has posted a three-minute clip of a game, but the audio is someone telling him how “We were one second away from telling the rocket to abort” — and how the amazing ‘chopstick’ Super Heavy booster catch was close to being a scary crash.

While TechCrunch suggests he “inadvertently” broadcasted this, it’s not a broadcast. Someone clipped it this way.

Go read how the US government’s big bet on Intel is in jeopardy.

Intel stands to receive $8.5 billion in CHIPS Act funding, ostensibly to make America lead in silicon again, but Intel’s not looking like much of a leader right now. Among other things, Anna Swanson and Tripp Mickle at The New York Times found out Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has asked Big Tech to order chips from Intel fabs — and most of them said no.

5.25-inch floppy disks control San Francisco trains — but the city’s a step away from changing that.

SF’s transportation authority has approved a $212M contract for Hitachi to replace its Muni Metro control system and track its trains with Wi-Fi or cellular instead.

SF had forecast “catastrophic failure” if disks weren’t replaced. The SF Board of Supervisors still needs to approve the contract, SFMTA spokesperson Erica Kato confirms to The Verge.

Toying with the GPD Win Max 2, a lilliputian computing dream.

A tiny $1200 laptop that doubles as a gaming handheld, with an incredible array of ports. Surprisingly easy to type on, plays games as well or better than a Legion Go, supports two kinds of eGPUs. Keyboard and touchpad make navigating Windows way easier than most handhelds.

But you might not enjoy holding its stiff metal frame, and it’s better paired with a mouse!
