Musk “cock-blocked” Bezos at Trump dinner.

The New York Times says president Musk “was not initially expected to be part of the dinner but joined as it was underway.” Images originally shared on a now deleted Instagram story from a person who is reportedly “at Mar-a-lago a lot,” described the scene as follows:

“At 8:30 PM Musk appears out of nowhere and sits himself down and Bezos looks completely caught off guard and uncomfortable like he had been cock-blocked... The tension between Musk and Bezos known rivals is palpable as they do their best to engage politely but clearly have no love for each other...”

    Taiwan considers Amazon’s Project Kuiper.

Taipei wants to make its communications networks less vulnerable to Chinese attack. Starlink isn’t an option because of Musk’s business ties to China and his company’s refusal to relinquish control in a joint venture. And Eutelsat’s OneWeb constellation of low Earth satellites isn’t up to snuff, according to technology minister Wu Cheng-wen:

“We found that their bandwidth is too small for real applications,” the minister said about OneWeb. “So far as I know, the company is in financial problems at this moment, so they have a [delay] in developing the second generation satellites.

Bezos’ Kuiper is still just a promise but is expected to begin offering service from its constellation of low Earth orbit satellites next year.

    Samsung’s ‘screens everywhere’ initiative.

In addition to the absurd 21.5- and 32-inch screens already available on its fridges, it’s now offering a smaller 9-inch option while slapping 7-inch displays on its washer, dryer, and wall oven. Smaller 4.3-inch displays will be available in some markets.

The screens provide local and central control of Samsung’s connected appliances as well as entertainment. And they’ll undoubtedly be great places to display ads. Hooray!

    Galaxy S25 on January 22nd.

Both @evleaks and @sondesix are saying that’s the date for Samsung’s next Unpacked event, with the former sharing a leaked Italian marketing image as confirmation. In addition to the company’s much leaked Galaxy S25 series of phones we’re expecting to hear more about Samsung’s “Project Moohan“ XR headset we recently previewed.

    More tech regulation cometh.

Ofcom has published the first codes of practice and guidance in support of the UK’s Online Safety Act meant to protect children and adults from over 130 “priority offences” including terror, hate, fraud, and sexual abuse. Tech companies of all sizes have until March 16th, 2025 to conduct risk assessments and to then begin implementing measures to protect users, assuming parliamentary procedures go as planned.

    In a statement, Ofcom said:

For too long, sites and apps have been unregulated, unaccountable and unwilling to prioritise people’s safety over profits. That changes from today. The safety spotlight is now firmly on tech firms and it’s time for them to act. Those that come up short can expect Ofcom to use the full extent of our enforcement powers against them.

Failure to comply could result in fines up to £18M (about $23M) or 10 percent of worldwide revenue — whichever is greater — and a country-wide ban.

Big-ass batteries for your big-ass battery.

You can now expand DJI’s Power 1000 solar generator that I reviewed with up to five of these new $1,169 2kWh Power Expansion Battery 2000 units daisy-chained together over DJI’s proprietary SDC port, for a maximum capacity of 11kWh. Add solar and you can produce a steady 2400W of AC output indefinitely, or at least until you master a rosetta pattern in your latte art.

    Samsung shuffle.

The company is rearranging the deck chairs on the C-level after falling behind SK Hynix and TSMC in its memory and foundry chip businesses. The move should also better position the chaebol in the event that its grand-nepo-baby leader Jay Y. Lee has to serve yet another prison term.

Grab and transfer files from midair.

Huawei announced its new Mate 70 flagship and Mate X6 foldable today — the first devices running the company’s homegrown Google-less HarmonyOS NEXT operating system. Both feature this nifty transfer feature, but it’s limited to just images for now.
