You can now fixel your Pixel 8 phones with genuine Google parts from iFixit.

Google said in October the parts would be available for seven years once they start selling on the iFixit store. Now Pixel 8 and 8 Pro parts are here they’re here, wrote ArsTechnica today.

A Pixel 8 Pro rear camera costs a collar-yanking $199.99, but can you really put a price on the ability to take what may or may not be a photo?

Apple agrees to settle a lawsuit alleging it profited from gift card scammers.

Reuters reported that Apple is drafting a settlement with plaintiffs who alleged that Apple routinely and knowingly kept a 30 percent “commission” from gift card scams for itself, letting scammers have the other 70 percent.

The suit covered anyone who fell for the scam, wherein urgent-sounding callers fool victims into buying gift cards and reading the code to them, between 2015 and July 31st, 2020, Reuters wrote.

Microsoft is adding voice shortcuts to Windows 11.

The latest Canary build of Windows 11 (Preview build 26020) debuts the ability to create and map custom voice commands to one or more actions like opening a folder or triggering a key combination. Users start by saying “show voice shortcuts,” then clicking “Create Command.”

It’s a bittersweet update, though — WordPad won’t install on this build, signaling the true beginning of the end for the trusty, simple word processor.

Tesla delivered 1.81 million cars in 2023.

The company squeezed out roughly 1,300 more vehicles in the final three months of the year than analysts had expected, according to Bloomberg. Tesla said in a press release this morning that, overall, that was a 38 percent year-over-year increase.

Most of the year’s sales were of the Model 3 or Model Y, but the company claimed 68,874 deliveries of other vehicles, too.

Our review of the Lofree Flow keeps haunting my browser.

I’ve been mechanical keyboard-curious for a long time. Not because I’ve never used one. I’m old; of course I have.

Yet I can’t get over how much I (and my wrists) love the Magic Keyboard’s low profile. That’s probably why I keep coming back to Dan Seifert’s Lofree Flow review. But it’s pricey. Then I noticed it’s $30 off right now (see screenshot below).

Guess I’m finally buying the dang thing.

A screenshot of a dropdown menu showing a $30 coupon for the Lofree Flow.
“The Lofree Flow is a low-profile keyboard that types and sounds like a full-height one,” according to Dan.

How do two gas giants become isolated in the cosmos?

A November story from Quanta Magazine that was published in Wired today considered the nascent attempts to explain so-called Jupiter Mass Binary Objects (JUMBOs) — gas giant pairs, free-floating and orbiting only each other — littering the Orion nebula.

According to the article, they’re too light to have formed alone and are unexpectedly numerous. One possibility is planets with “tightly-spaced orbits” being dragged out of their solar system by a passing star.
