Masimo CEO thinks Apple can’t code its way out of the Watch ban.

Joe Kiani, whose company’s patent claims may halt sales of Apple’s newest smartwatches, explained his skepticism to Bloomberg.

“I don’t think that could work — it shouldn’t — because our patents are not about the software,” he said. “They are about the hardware with the software.”

Former US Patent Office director Andrei Iancu told The Verge Apple has a chance, albeit a slim one, depending on the patents’ wording.

Apple has lost another core Jony Ive-era designer.

Peter Russell-Clarke, who has been with the company as a hardware designer since 2006, left Apple in October, according to Bloomberg. He had worked alongside Jony Ive, the company’s former head of design.

Vast, a space technology company bent on creating space habitats with artificial gravity, announced today that it had hired Russel-Clarke as an advisor to create an industrial design team.

Netflix picks up ‘Warrior,’ another orphaned show.

The bad news is, according to Deadline, Max has canceled Warrior, leaving the show with three seasons. The good news is that Netflix made a deal to stream those seasons in Max’s markets.

The other bad news is it may not get a fourth season, since, the article notes, the actors are no longer under contract, and the show’s lead, Andrew Koji, is already otherwise obligated.

NASA posted a nice picture of Uranus.

The James Webb Space Telescope grabbed this infrared photo of Uranus’ north polar cap, nine of its moons, and its rings, including “the extremely faint and diffuse” Zeta ring.

NASA said in a post today that the picture is a combination of long and short exposures to correct for the gas giant’s fast rotation.

TikTok tweaks its UI for big screens while Instagram still has no iPad app.

TikTok announced that the updated app will take better advantage of tablet and foldable screen real estate by pushing overlaid text to the side. The app also now works in portrait or landscape mode for devices where it didn’t previously, the company wrote.

Meanwhile, in the year 2023, Instagram on the iPad is just a crummy, blown-up iPhone app.

Tablets and foldables might actually be the best way to watch TikTok now.

NordVPN now has an Apple TV app.

The company says in its announcement that the app, which uses Nord’s WireGuard-based NordLynx VPN protocol, will let users watch shows they’re following while abroad and prevent ISPs from identifying and throttling streaming content.

NordVPN was initially skeptical that Apple would place limitations on Apple TV’s native VPN support, but later said it was working on an app.
