Bram Moolenaar, the open source developer who created Vim, has passed away at 62.

Moolenaar’s family announced his August 3rd passing from a quickly-progressing medical condition in a Google Groups post.

In 1991, Moolenaar created Vim, an open-source code editor. It was based on Bill Joy’s vi editor, and quickly became popular with Linux users. Moolenaar actively contributed to Vim until just a few weeks ago, according to Ars Technica.

Those nuclear fusion scientists are at it again.

After reporting a successful nuclear fusion reaction in December, scientists at Lawrence Livermore National Library have now improved on their success.

A new experiment “produced a higher yield” than last year’s, said laboratory spokesperson Paul Rhien in a statement to the Financial Times. Rhien said “analysis of those results is underway,” and the lab will report the results in “peer-reviewed publications.”

The Zelda: TotK and BotW horse-riding music looks as hard to play as it sounds.

TikTok creator Nahre Sol put up a couple of masterful, quick breakdowns of the songs that play when you ride a horse, in both The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and its prequel, Breath of the Wild.

The songs are slightly different whether you’re riding during the day or at night, and both look... challenging.

Good things come to those who wait.

Microsoft has found an all new level of efficiency in its August 4th Windows 11 test build: Updating your computer’s IP address by typing “ipconfig /renew” into Windows command line is faster. New asynchronous error handling drops response time from 4.1 seconds to just .1 seconds, “depending on system and network conditions.”

And if that doesn’t inspire you, the build also brings HDR support for desktop backgrounds using the JPEG XR (.jxr) file format.

    But what about Oppenheimer?

It’s doing well, too. It’s now sitting at $552.9 million internationally, according to Variety. Not bad for a movie opening opposite Barbie, AKA the fastest Warner Bros. Pictures’ movie to reach $1 billion at the global box office.

And I’m sure that’s not all just Barbenheimer stans. If you’re on the fence about seeing it, give The Verge’s Charles Pulliam-Moore’s review a read.
