What’s really different about the AirPods 4 models?

iFixit x-rayed and ripped Apple’s new earbuds apart, and found two things the AirPods 4 with ANC have that the regular model doesn’t: A “$2 microphone” and a speaker in the case are what accounts for the $50 price difference between the two.

Of course, that doesn’t account for any software Apple has to license to make its ANC work.

“You are destroying the moment even as you are documenting it.”

So said Daniel Plasche, co-director of a Berlin venue, while talking to The New York Times about the club’s decision to follow other nightclubs by putting stickers on customers’ smartphone camera lenses.

“There is something unifying, ritualistic about the dance floor,” he added, but the atmosphere was ruined when people use their phones to take images that “they will never look at again, anyways.”

iOS 18 message effects are more fun than I thought.

A Threads post that I recently saw opened my eyes to a fun trick with Apple’s iOS 18 iMessage effects: You can make little emoji / ASCII-style animations with them.

I lost the original post (if that was you, let me know!), but I immediately used the idea. If you’ve done this, feel free to share your best ones. Below is a gallery of mine.

A GIF showing a stick figure with an eyebrow raise emoji, shaking its head.
A GIF showing an ASCII-style dragon wiggling, using a dragon head emoji.
A GIF of a pic head emoji with an ASCII-style body, jumping up and down.

SpaceX is pausing Falcon 9 flights after issues following its Crew-9 launch.

The rocket’s second stage “experienced an off-nominal deorbit burn” and missed its landing target following yesterday’s flight, SpaceX posted.

The company is investigating the root cause. In the meantime, as Space notes, a California satellite launch that was scheduled for today has been postponed.
