It’s a tale as old as time. Apple announces a new device, and a rush of accessories that work with it immediately come out. So it goes with Apple’s new MacBook Pros, which have abandoned any and all legacy connectors for four Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports (and one 3.5mm headphone jack). And less than 24 hours after the Apple’s announcement, LaCie has already announced its first Thunderbolt 3 external storage drive, the Bolt3.

The Bolt3 uses a pair of PCIe SSDs for a total of 2TB of storage, and can transfer data at speeds of up to 2800MB/s, which LaCie claims makes it “the world’s fastest desktop drive.” LaCie also announced two enterprise level Thunderbolt 3 drives, the LaCie 12big Thunderbolt 3 and 6big Thunderbolt 3, which come in 48TB - 120TB and 24TB - 60TB capacities, respectively.

the LaCie Bolt3 will cost a hefty $1999

But that kind of speed doesn’t come cheap: the LaCie Bolt3 will cost a hefty $1999 when it releases sometime in Q4 of this year. (The enterprise drives start at $3199 for a 24TB 6big Thunderbolt 3 and $6399 for a 48TB 12big Thunderbolt 3.) To put that in perspective, instead of a Bolt3, you could buy a $89 hard drive-based USB 3.0 2TB external drive, one of Apple’s $19 USB-C to USB adaptors, and a second new $1799 13-inch MacBook Pro with some money left over. Up to you, really.
