Walls keep secrets. Like, for instance, where’s the stud? Walls will never tell. Also, electric wires are inside walls. But where do we usually use all that electricity? Outside of walls! Really makes you think, doesn’t it?
It’s time to stop hiding electricity inside of walls
UM Project
A new art project, as seen on FastCo Design, solves our age-old struggle with walls by embedding circuitry in wallpaper, using conductive inks. Conduct is a collaboration between Flavor Paper and UM Project, and it’s on display at the NYCxDesign festival in New York.
The conceptual wallpaper hooks up to conceptual electronics, like a fan, lamp, and speaker — which can be turned on by simply touching the conductive ink in the right spot. The whole system is laid out in a modular grid, which kind of reminds me of Factorio — probably because I’ve been playing a lot of Factorio lately.
Look, I don’t know if this wallpaper will ever come to market as an actual product, but I do know this: walls can’t hide this stuff forever.
