A thing I learned today: Energizer has been selling smartphones for years. Or, to be more precise, phones bearing the Energizer brand and logo have been on sale for a long time. I suppose in a world where Kodak puts its name on selfie sticks (and, at this year’s CES, headphones), Energizer’s brazen rebadging of a generic Android device should be within the realm of the expected.

Produced under license by Avenir Telecom, the Energizer Power Max P600S is a peculiar mix of budget and premium features. Up front, it looks like an LG V30 with slightly thicker (though still tiny) bezels, and on the inside — living up to the implications of its brand — the phone has a 4,500mAh battery. On the rear, there’s a dual-camera system and a fingerprint sensor. You can even get this device with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. But the elongated 6-inch screen only has a 2160 x 1080 resolution, the rear cover is plastic, albeit with a faux carbon fiber pattern, and Avenir has opted for a MediaTek chip to cut costs. Oh, and the P600S runs Android Nougat, which is going to be two years old this year.
Even with its cost-cutting measures and meager prospects of seeing an Android update, the Energizer P600S costs $349.99 with 32GB of storage and 3GB of RAM or $439.99 with with a doubling of both. It will be available in February across Europe, and, at some point in the second quarter of this year, in the United States.
