You can preorder Bellus3D’s $499 3D selfie camera now

Last year at CES, I was taken aback by Bellus3D, a company with an uncannily accurate 3D face scanner that took incredibly unnerving selfies, but it was just a prototype. But this year, the company is back with a finished version that you can preorder now for $499 over at Bellus3D’s website.

Like the original prototype, the finished device — officially called the Bellus3D Face Camera Pro — works on a twofold scale. First, an infrared depth camera system scans your face, capturing your facial structures. Then, the front-facing camera on your phone or tablet is used to capture a more detailed color image of your face, which the software uses for smaller details like pores and wrinkles, along with color.

Taking a scan with the Bellus3D Face Camera Pro is simple — connect it via USB-C to your phone or tablet, launch the camera, and slowly rotate your head from left to right while it captures your image. Like last year, the camera still struggles with things like hair, glasses, and jewelry, but the end results are still super impressive, if a little creepy.

Bellus3D also showcased some new uses for its 3D face scanning: Face ID-esque security that uses the 3D face maps for authenticating a user. The demo at CES worked pretty well, albeit winding up a little underwhelming given that Apple has successfully shipped Face ID in the iPhone X already.

That brings us to Bellus3D’s final CES announcement: the company is working with a company called Spreadtrum Communications, which produces reference designs for Android phone parts, to work on integrating Bellus3D’s tech directly into smartphones. The company showed off a working prototype of a fully integrated smartphone with the scanner, but it already makes Bellus3D’s module look kind of clunky and outdated. With companies like Samsung already looking to get into the face-scanning game, Bellus3D may have some competition on its hands by the time it actually gets its tech into a device on the market.
